Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Indian Days Upon a hanging precipice atop of the Eagle Scout Butte there appeared a motionless and solitary figure - almost eagle-like he perched! The people in the camp below saw him, but none looked at him long. They turned their heads quickly away with a nervous tingling, for the height above the plains was great. Almost spirit-like among the upper clouds the young warrior sat immovable. It was Antelope. He was fasting and seeking a sign from the "Great Mystery," for such was the first step of the young and ambitious Sioux who wished to be a noted warrior among his people. He is a princely youth, among the wild Sioux, who hunts for his tribe and not for himself! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Indian Stories Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Indian T was somewhere in the seventies when old Peaceful Hart woke to a realization that gold-hunting and Iumbago do not take kindly to one another, and the fact that his pipe and dim-eyed meditation appealed to him more keenly than did his prospector's pick and shovel and pan seemed to imply that he was growing old. He was a silent man, by occupation and by nature, so he said nothing about it; but, like the wild things of prairie and wood, instinctively began preparing for the winter of his life. Where he had lately been wash ing tentatively the sand along Snake River, he built a ranch. His prospector's tools he used in digging ditches to irrigate his new-made meadows, and his mining days he lived over again only in halting recital to his sons when they clamored for details of the old days when the Indians were not mere untidy neighbors to be gos siped with and fed, but enemies to be fought, upon occasion. But they have been years that may well count for decades in the history of the world, and not least in the history of India. Much has happened in India to confirm many of the views which I then expressed. Much has happened also to lead me to modify others, and to recognise more clearly to-day the shortcomings of a system of government, in many ways unrivalled, but subject to the inevitable limitations of alien rule. "My friends, I must not spoil your dance. Oh, you would not care to see if you only knew what is in my blanket. Sing on! dance on! I must not show you what I carry on my back," answered Iktomi, nudging his own sides with his elbows. This reply broke up the ring entirely. Now all the ducks crowded about Iktomi. "We must see what you carry! We must know what is in your blanket!" they shouted in both his ears. Some even brushed their wings against the mysterious bundle. Nudging himself again, wily Iktomi said, "My friends, 't is only a pack of songs I carry in my blanket." "Oh, then let us hear your songs!" cried the curious ducks. At length Iktomi consented to sing his songs. With delight all the ducks flapped their wings and cried together, "Hoye! hoye!" Iktomi, with great care, laid down his bundle on the ground. "I will build first a round straw house, for I never sing my songs in the open air," said he. Quickly he bent green willow sticks, planting both ends of each pole into[...]".

His voice is soft and low at the campfire of his nation, but terror-giving in the field of battle. Such was Antelope's reputation. The more he sought the "Great Mystery" in solitude, the more gentle and retiring he became, and in the same proportion his courage and manliness grew. None could say that he was not a kind son and a good hunter, for he had already passed the "two-arrow-to-kill," his buffalo examination. On a hot midsummer morning a few weeks later, while most of the inmates of the teepees were breakfasting in the open air, the powerful voice of the herald resounded among the pine-clad heights and green valleys.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastwards, or Realities of Indian Life Mr. And Mrs. Chantney, and a hurried farewell to his Sister, went off to an hotel in the neighbourhood. Here for a while their routes became different, as Hampton Was to go in a steamer with the heavy luggage from Southampton, while she journeyed across France a few days later, with her new friends, meeting again at Alexandria. Mrs. Chantney was quite an old Indian in her appearance and manners, although she was not at all an old woman. She had that worn, haggard look, which Englishwomen acquire after a long residence in the tropics, and was dressed fashionably and yet carelesslv. She was much less stiff, our heroine thought, than untravelled Englishwomen generally are, and altogether had a slightly foreign air which rather pleased than otherwise. She seemed satisfied with her young companion's appearance, and very soon commenced a series of lectures concerning her conduct on board ship, &c You know, my dear, she said, without any flattery, you are very nice looking, and there are alwavs a number of good for nothing young officers on board these steamers, who will try to persuade you that they are ready to jump overboard for your sake, while the truth is they are probably engaged to some confiding girl in England, or have sworn the same vapid oaths to every one they have danced with; and in fact have been so spoiled by the way the young women go on now-a-days, that they are insufferable. India is the place to put a stop to that kind of thing. Fifty men and twenty women only in a ball-room, soon brings Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Indian Summer 'When the showers of early autumn follow close upon a very sultry summer, it is not unusual to see some trees in the orchards covered with the blossoms of spring - mostly those who have passed through the hot season, apparently barren and parched up, owing to some catastrophe that befell them in the early spring, either perhaps an unusual storm, or a very late frost which blighted their first promising bloom, and left them bare and leafless. Under the influence of the soft warm damp of autumn, however, the sap in their branches, so long checked by the burning heat of the past summer, begins to rise and to swell into new buds and leaves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Punishment of the Stingy: And Other Indian Stories In transcribing stories such as these, care must be used to take down just what the nar rator says. The stories must be reproduced as they are told; otherwise they lose that primitive flavor which is often one of their chief charms. In their true form they are full of human nat ure, full of unconscious suggestion as to how the primitive mind worked, and full also of hints as to the customs and life of the people in the old days.
