Book Their Patriotic Duty

Download or read book Their Patriotic Duty written by Robert Francis Engs and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the farm families in the river country of southern Ohio sent fathers, husbands, and sons to fight and die in the Civil War. Few families have bequeathed a record of that experience as remarkable as that created by the Evans family: an extraordinary collection of letters that offers a unique portrait of life both on the home front and on the front lines. From his homestead near Ripley on the Ohio River, patriarch Andrew Evans sent two sons to war, and from 1862 to 1866 father and sons wrote each other hundreds of letters. Called "the soldier's letters" by the family, this cache lay untouched in a barn until the 1980s, when Robert Engs was invited to edit them. Here are 273 family letters, most between Andrew and son Samuel, that draw us into the complicated lives of a Midwestern family not just suffering the dislocations of war, but also experiencing--and describing in intimate detail--the sorrows and occasional joys of rural life in nineteenth-century America. From the front lines with the 70th Ohio and, later, as an officer commanding a unit of "colored troops," Samuel writes of the horrors of Shiloh, of the loneliness and fear of patrolling Union lines in Tennessee. Andrew writes of the seasons of rural life, of illness and deaths in the family, of the complicated politics of this borderland where abolitionists and "Copperhead" pro-slavery voices shared daily debates. One of the very few collections of Civil War letters from home front and front lines, this meticulously edited book is an engrossing chronicle of war and peace, family and country, and an indispensable addition to the history of the Civil War.

Book Letters of a Family During the Civil War Abridged Annotated

Download or read book Letters of a Family During the Civil War Abridged Annotated written by Georgeanna Woolsey Bacon and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable collections of letters to come out of the American Civil War is this compilation by the Woolsey family. Educated, aware, and closely affectionate, the family exchanged and kept letters throughout the war. Included in the set are those from family members serving in hospitals, taking collections for soldiers at home, and a soldier serving on the front lines with Grant, Sheridan, and Meade. What was life like for those who watched their country rent by war? The desperate anxiety and despair of the early war and the hopeful expressions later on give a vivid and very human face to an event that, though long past, is still apart of who we are as Americans today. There is also humor and gossip, and an incredible awareness of what was going on in battles far from home. That the collection includes letters from various family members provides a view into Civil War life as no other. For less than you'd spend on gas going to the library, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book The Civil War Letters of William H Leatherwood Joseph D Leatherwood and Family

Download or read book The Civil War Letters of William H Leatherwood Joseph D Leatherwood and Family written by Joseph Leatherwood and published by Joseph Leatherwood. This book was released on 2017 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These letters were authored primarily by two brothers: William H. Leatherwood and Joseph D. Leatherwood. They demonstrate the importance of letters (communications) to the soldier and to posterity. These letters offer the perspective of men at war and all it encompasses from its fury to its boredom; from its glory to its horrors. As witnesses to war these letters speak to the times and are a testament to the perseverance of men at war - demonstrating the necessary price paid (war) to build this great nation. The editor hopes the reader will learn from the letters. Of course, none of this insight and understanding of the war and men at war would be possible without the authors of these letters sitting down around a camp fire or in a trench or under a tent and recording their thoughts and descriptions of the times they were living. Years later, it took the forethought of Lois Ellen Fenn to invest the time and effort to resurrect their thoughts and descriptions. She breathed new life into them with her transcription for posterity's sake. And we owe Mary Hadley Francis for preserving these letters and sharing them with the family and the world. This book should be included in every genealogy library across the fruited plain, owned by genealogical societies and used by Civil War reenactment organizations to bring authenticity to their plans of action. - Joseph Dalton Leatherwood, Junior, Editor

Book Letters Home

Download or read book Letters Home written by Bishop Asbury Cook and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The news has come that the Rebel Braggs army is whipped and cut to pieces. One whole regiment come over to our side, so I guess Kentucky is sick of fighting against the Union. It is near 12 o'clock and we have been taking up our tents and putting them in line, so we have quite a village. To see the fortifications, forts, and cannons that are planted here is astonishing. There is men enough too. Regiment after Regiment. I am not discontented in the least. I see no hardship but what I can endure for the good of my country..." The 144th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry signed up its first recruit, Bishop Asbury Cook, on August 12, 1862, and Cook remained with the regiment until it mustered out in July, 1865. The letters contained in this volume span Cook's career with the regiment. Letters written by Cook to his wife, Louisa Maria (Alexander) Cook are grouped by month and describe the daily activities and everyday concerns of the average soldier. Each month's section contains a chronology of events for the Civil War nationwide, a chronology of events within the 144th Regiment, and a history of the regiment. Supplemental historical background enhances, and sometimes contrasts with, the contents of Cook's letters.

Book Cole Family Civil War Letters

Their mother or wife saved all letters written to her and they are transcribed with little editing. Edwin served as a Drummer Boy until he was 18 and could carry a rifle. Father and son were both wounded, hospitalized, and captured and imprisoned in Libby Prison at the same time. Their experiences are all expressed in these more than 100 letters. I know that there are many historians that would be interested in these historic accounts of the war. Ships and officers are named. The Black Regiment is recognized and other important events and battles are recorded in these letters.
