Book excerpt: "You know that fall is here and winter comes soon when the summer people leave and Maine is restored to righteousness." So says celebrated essayist John Gould in this wonderful collection inspired by the changing of the seasons in Maine. These forty-nine essays revel in the seasonal magnificence the state has to offer and offer just enough humor, seasoned with country lore and wisdom to keep you turning the pages as you read in front of the wood stove on a cold winter afternoon. No wonder the critic Mark Kramer said, "If there is reincarnation, I'm selfish enough to wish that the next time around John Gould would come back as a writer again."

Book Scripture and Song in Nineteenth Century Britain

Download or read book Scripture and Song in Nineteenth Century Britain written by James Grande and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together new approaches to music history to reveal the interdependence of music and religion in nineteenth-century culture. As composers and performers drew inspiration from the Bible and new historical sciences called into question the historicity of Scripture, controversies raged over the performance, publication and censorship of old and new musical forms. From oratorio to opera, from parlour song to pantomime, and from hymn to broadside, nineteenth-century Britons continually encountered elements of the biblical past in song. Both elite and popular music came to play a significant role in the formation, regulation and contestation of religious and cultural identity and were used to address questions of class, nation and race, leading to the beginnings of ethnomusicology. This richly interdisciplinary volume brings together musicologists, historians, literary and art historians and theologians to reveal points of intersection between music, religion and cultural history.

Download or read book Singing for Equality written by Cheryl C. Boots and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-18 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the American Civil War, men and women who imagined a multiracial American society (social visionaries) included Protestant sacred music in their speeches and writings. Music affirmed the humanity and equality of Indians, whites and blacks and validated blacks and Indians as Americans. In contrast to dominant voices of white racial privilege, social visionaries criticized republican hypocrisy and Christian hypocrisy. Many social visionaries wrote hymns, transcending racial lines and creating a sense of equality among singers and their audience. Singing and reading Protestant sacred music encouraged community formation that led to American human rights activism in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Book Chambers s Twentieth Century Dictionary Complete

Download or read book Chambers s Twentieth Century Dictionary Complete written by Various Authors and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 4411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third English Dictionary which the present Editor has prepared, and he may therefore lay claim to an unusually prolonged apprenticeship to his trade. It is surely unnecessary for him to say that he believes this to be the best book of the three, and he can afford to rest content if the Courteous Reader receive it with the indulgence extended to his Library Dictionary, published in the spring of 1898. It is based upon that work, but will be found to possess many serviceable qualities of its own. It is not much less in content, and its greater relative portability is due to smaller type, to thinner paper, and still more to a rigorous compression and condensation in the definitions, by means of which room has been found for many additional words. The aim has been to include all the common words in literary and conversational English, together with words obsolete save in the pages of Spenser, Shakespeare, Milton, and the Authorised Version of the Bible. An attempt has been made also to include the common terms of the sciences and the arts of life, the vocabulary of sport, those Scotch and provincial words which assert themselves in Burns, Scott, the Brontës, and George Eliot, and even the coinages of word-masters like Carlyle, Browning, and Meredith. Numberless compound idiomatic phrases have also been given a place, in each case under the head of the significant word.
