Book excerpt: The thirty-two Ansel Adams posters published by Little, Brown over the last fifteen years have sold nearly 2 million copies, making the series perhaps the most successful single-artist poster line of all time. Now, to update the series for a new century and a new generation, Little, Brown and The Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust have commissioned Pentagram, the renowned international design firm, to create a fresh look for the posters. The two posters pictured here introduce Pentagram's beautiful new design. The images are larger and the sans serif typeface lends an elegant simplicity to the overall presentation. In response to requests, sheet sizes have been standardized so that commercially available poster frames can be used. And to highlight the fact that these are the only authorized Ansel Adams posters published, each will feature a striking blind-embossed seal. The one thing that has not changed is the painstaking attention to quality -- the superb duotone printing and heavy coated stock that are hallmarks of the series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lines on the Land Writers, Art, and the National Parks Scott Herring The nineteenth-century photographer William Henry Jackson once complained of the skepticism with which early descriptions of Yellowstone were met: the place was too wondrous to be believed. The public demanded proof, and a host of artists and writers obliged. These early explorers possessed a vigorous devotion to the young nation's wilderness--the naturalist John Muir famously toured the land from Wisconsin to Florida on foot--and through their work established aesthetic categories that exist to this day. In Lines on the Land, Scott Herring contends that these writers and artists were canon makers, recognizing the national parks as naturally occurring works of art and conferring upon them a cultural prestige: the parks were the splendid focal points of the American landscape. These early, canonizing works are homages to a vast, untouched wilderness. This praise would gradually give way, however, to a distinctly American anger--what Herring calls "outraged idealism." Later generations were faced with a changing culture that had imperfectly absorbed, and even misrepresented, the national-park aesthetic. The postwar park was overrun by cars and tourists who could not possibly match the pioneering naturalists' profound commitment to and appreciation for their surroundings. The collective tone of the parks' chroniclers, as a result, evolved from celebration of awesome beauty to indignation over the perceived corruption of the parks, both as an ideal and as actual physical settings. Herring traces this shift through the work of a wide spectrum of creative minds, from early figures such as Muir and Thomas Moran to later observers of the parks such as Ansel Adams, Sylvia Plath, Edward Abbey, and Rick Bass. The text is punctuated by autobiographical "interchapters," in which Herring relates the book's chief themes to his own experiences in Yellowstone National Park. Download or read book Regularity of Old Faithful Geyser Yellowstone National Park Wyoming written by Philip Forsyth Fix and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is common belief that Old Faithful Geyser, the most celebrated geyser in the world, 1) has become irregular and even erratic, 2) does not erupt in winter, 3) erupts to heights much less than formerly, 4) discharges much less water than formerly, and 5) is the only regular large geyser. These popular legends are false, the record for 1870-1947 shows a degree of relative regularity in behavior that is amazing for a geyser of such great size and complexity of function."-Opening.

Book excerpt: In the world of literary journals and little magazines, the Carolina Quarterly is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the South. Founded in 1948 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the magazine has published many luminaries of modern and contemporary literature, including Robert Morgan, Evie Shockley, Joyce Carol Oates, Doris Betts, and others. This anthology gathers some of the best work from the last three-quarters of a century, along with an informative essay about the journal's history and impact. The volume reminds us of the ways small literary journals reflect the voices of their region and changed the literary landscape. This work reaches beyond the imagined boundaries of a single university or single state. Thus the anthology also celebrates a form—the student-run literary journal—that has shaped the regional and national conversation and reflects the astounding accomplishment of the Carolina Quarterly over the past seventy-five years.

Book excerpt: Yellowstone is America's premier national park. Today is often a byword for conservation, natural beauty, and a way for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors. But it was not always this way. Wonderlandscape presents a new perspective on Yellowstone, the emotions various natural wonders and attractions evoke, and how this explains the park's relationship to America as a whole.Whether it is artists or naturalists, entrepreneurs or pop-culture icons, each character in the story of Yellowstone ends up reflecting and redefining the park for the values of its era. For example, when Ernest Thompson Seton wanted to observe bears in 1897, his adventures highlighted the way the park transformed from a set of geological oddities to a wildlife sanctuary, reflecting a nation was concerned about disappearing populations of bison and other species. Subsequent eras added Rooseveltian masculinity, ecosystem science, and artistic inspiration as core Yellowstone hallmarks. As the National Park system enters its second century, Wonderlandscape allows us to reflect on the values and heritage that Yellowstone alone has come to represent—how it will shape the America's relationship with her land for generations to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming There are about geysers and hot springs in the park. Most of them are located in the six principal geyser basins, the Norris, Lower, Midway, Upper, Heart Lake, and Shoshone Basins, all lying in the west and south central parts of the park. The geysers exhibit a large variety of character and action. Some, like Old Faithful, Daisy, and Riverside, spout at quite regular intervals; others are irregular. Some burst upward with immense power; others shoot streams at angles or bubble and foam in action. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
