Book Old English Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old English Grammar Classic Reprint written by Joseph Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Grammar It was originally our intention to include in the present volume some chapters on Syntax, but it was found that the inclusion of these chapters would have rendered the book too large for the Series. This omission of the syntax cannot however be regarded as a serious draw back, because the volume dealing with historical English syntax is already in active preparation, and will, it is hoped, be ready for press this year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old English Grammar The first effectual stimulus to a historical study of Old English, and the first outlines of Old English dialectology, we owe to Henry Sweet. In the introduction to his edition of the Cura Pastoralis the peculiarities of Early West Saxon were pointed out for the first time; and his paper entitled 'dialects and Prehistoric Forms of English' (transactions of the Philological Society, 187 5 - 7 6, pp 453 ff.) first directed attention to the earliest documents, and briefly characterized the principal dialects. Of prime importance are likewise his investigations into the quantity of Old English vowels (120, note); these were intended to prepare the way for a new edition of his History of English Sounds, London, 1874 - a work which leans rather to a theoretical treatment of Old English phonology. Besides, the grammatical introduction to Sweet's anglo-saxon Reader (now in its third edition, Oxford, 1881, though I have been able to consult only the second) contains many valuable, and, what is deserving of special recognition in this department of research, trustworthy particulars. Book A First Book in Old English

Download or read book A First Book in Old English written by Albert S. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Old English: Grammar, Reader, Notes, and Vocabulary The selections have been made with reference to giving a fairly just, though necessarily incomplete, view of the surroundings, occupations, problems, ideals, and senti ments of our English ancestors. The earlier pieces of both prose and poetry are short; the longer ones that follow either have more sustained interest, or are sup ported by their reference to preceding ones; but they, too, fall into natural subdivisions, partially indicated in the printing, so that they may be read as successions of short extracts. It may be objected that Latin and Greek have been too freely used for illustration. The reply to such an objection is twofold: that the book is likely to fall into the hands of some who possess at least an elemen tary acquaintance with one or both of these languages, and that to these the disclosure of the relations involved in a comparison with the ancient tongues will materially increase their pleasure and their gain; and, secondly, that the book may be intelligently read, from cover to cover, without the slightest knowledge of either Greek or Latin. Book An Introduction to the Grammar of Old English

Download or read book An Introduction to the Grammar of Old English written by Michael Joseph Cummings and published by Equinox Publishing (UK). This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies the techniques of systemic functional grammar to the description of the Old English historical dialect, 650-1150 CE. Systemic functional grammar is an approach to the description of language which distinguishes three separate functions in communication: language as representation, language as attitude, and language as the construction of text. Most applications of systemic functional theory have concentrated on modern English. This book is the first comprehensive description of the Old English dialect on systemic functional principles. The book begins with an outline of systemic functional grammatical theory. It then describes the Old English clause with a separate grammar for each of the three general functions it serves, the representational, the attitudinal, and the text-formative. Other areas covered include structures and functions within nominal, verbal and adverbial groups; relationships among clauses; embedding; and cohesion. The book is thus designed to suit the needs of systemic functional grammarians who are interested in the historical development of the English language. It is also designed for students of Old English who are looking for ways of explaining the grammatical system of Old English on terms other than those of traditional grammar.

Book An Elementary Old English Grammar Early West Saxon Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Elementary Old English Grammar Early West Saxon Classic Reprint written by A. J. Wyatt and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Old English Grammar (Early West Saxon) Old English Grammar has hitherto been taught in three ways, which may be called respectively the Germanic, the Gothic, and the independent methods. Sievers assumes that the student possesses a certain knowledge of Germanic, and makes it the basis of his classifications; Cosijn believes that the ready way to the Old English tongue is to learn Gothic first - a theory not difficult to reduce ad absurdum. Sweet considers such methods as these "positively injurious"; he prefers to give the learner a thousand and one isolated facts, and carefully to withhold every clue by which they may be grouped, classified and remembered. The method followed in this work is more or less novel, being a compromise between Sievers and Sweet, an attempt to hit the happy mean; for, while the basis of arrangement has been the practical convenience of the learner in studying the actually existing phenomena of the language, no pains have been spared in order that he may have nothing to unlearn in the further pursuit of the subject. Some empirical rules are given, but they are of a quiet, harmless sort; Germanic has been taken as a guide throughout, although it is not needlessly obtruded. A few difficulties have necessarily been deferred to a later stage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Short Historical English Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Short Historical English Grammar Classic Reprint written by Henry Sweet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Historical English Grammar Sanskrit, &c., they are of little use for etymological purposes. But although most of those who have kept pace with the recent developments of Comparative Philology admit all this, some of them still plead for the retention of Grimm's Law on the ground of its being so interesting, and having such a stimulating effect on pupils. The answer to this is, By all means teach it then, but teach it as an extra, not as a part of English grammar, any more than you would include French, Latin, and Greek etymology in English grammar although, of course, English grammar undoubtedly leads up to all these subjects, and is more or less directly connected with them, in the same way as it is connected with the political, social, and literary history of England. The study of this grammar requires no preparation except a knowledge of the ordinary grammatical terms. It does not even postulate any practical knowledge of Old English, although I should advise every teacher of historical English grammar to let his pupils go through a preparatory course in Old English with the help of such a book as my Anglo Saxon Primer. Book excerpt: This book is designed especially for the literary student of English, and provides a single compact grammar primarily concerned with Classical Old English, rather than the other Old English dialects. The introduction provides a minimum background of knowledge and indicates the kinds of evidence on which the grammatical description is based.

Book The Elements of Old English

Download or read book The Elements of Old English written by Samuel Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Old English: Elementary Grammar and Reference Grammar The primary purpose of the authors of the Elements of Old English has been to produce an introductory book which will facilitate and expedite the teaching and study of Old English in such classes as their own, composed of graduate and advanced undergraduate students. To attain this object we have, in the Elementary Grammar, selected and arranged the essential paradigms, in the order of their relative importance, into twenty-four chapters designed as progressive lessons. In this part of the book the less frequent variant forms have been omitted. All the grammatical information necessary to enable a student to begin reading freely is contained in the first seven chapters. Each chapter includes a reading selection adapted to the advancing capacity of the student, and accompanied by notes explaining those forms which have not yet been presented systematically. In the chapters the primitive and prehistoric Old English sound changes have been explained more fully on a historical and phonetic basis than is usual in such a book as this, partly in order to clarify and rationalize the apparent irregularities of the inflections, and partly in order to acquaint elementary students with the methods and principles of the historical study of language and linguistic change. In the Reference Grammar is given a systematic and ordered treatment of Old English phonology and morphology which serves to bridge the gap between the Elementary Grammar and such standard grammars as those of Cosijn, Sievers, Wright, and Biilbring. It was originally intended to include a considerable body of texts with notes and glossary; but to do this at present would render the cost of the book prohibitive. The Elementary Grammar has been used in mimeographed editions at the Universities of Chicago, Michigan, and Wisconsin, at North western University, and at other universities and colleges. It has been twice re-written, and is now issued with the changes suggested by experience and criticism. Further criticisms and corrections from instructors and students will be welcomed.
