Download or read book Old Court Life in France Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Frances Elliot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Court Life in France, Vol. 2 Ews came from the army announcing brilliant success. The valour Of the King was specially extolled; he was no longer a bashful, feeble prince, victimised by feminine cabals, tyrannised over by Richelieu. He had suddenly become a warrior, foremost in danger, leading his troops in person into the hottest Of the fray. Each day his absence lasted, and every fresh intelligence that arrived, added to the excitement of Louise de Lafayette. The danger to which he was exposed made her tremble. She eagerly desired his return, not for the mere pleasure Of seeing and conversing with him (though that was very dear to her), but because She was sure that the time had Come when he would himself hold the reins Of government, and display all that noble ness of character with which her romantic fancy had invested him. Such, at least, was the conviction, however delusive, of the pretty maid Of honour, who, lost in contemplation of the King's virtues, failed to perceive the state Of her own heart. It has been termed the epoch of the true great ness of F rance, the true Renaissance of lit erature and [er beaux arts. It is indeed a period of very varied and romantic interest. Woman played an impor tant part in it - contributing largely towards the reform then achieved in the French language, and in the corrupt and gross manners of the age, and introducing into the social relations of life that peculiar grace, fascinating ease, vivacity, and undefinable charm still vainly sought for in society out of France. Under cover of the Skirts of Pere La Chaise and Madame de Maintenon. He knew the court thoroughly, and he was sure of the king; several attempts which had been made to oust him had turned to the confusion of his enemies, and yet he had not appeared to exult in his triumph in the least. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Courtiers and Favourites of Royalty, Vol. 1 of 2: Memoirs of the Court of France With Contemporary and Modern Illustrations Collected From the French National Archives; Memoirs of Marmontel In that eighteenth century so dissolute and so corrupt, Marmontel stands out as one of the frank faces, one of the good natures, that rest the spirit and comfort the heart He is the son of a poor tailor of Bort, and by the nonentity of his social status seems destined to lead an obscure life. Happily he has a tender, intelligent, mentally distinguished mother. This excellent woman comprehends that her son has received from nature a felicitous bent for study; she does not shrink from the greatest sacrifices to aid in its development. She is at first seconded by an old priest, the Abbe Vaissiere, who instils the first rudiments of Latin into the child; then she places her son in the Jesuits' college at Mauriac to finish his studies there. How difficult now is the life of this youth! Without money, Marmontel is obliged, in order to pay for his daily bread, to give private lessons to his more fortunate young schoolmates; finally he succeeds in obtaining an appointment as professor of philosophy with the Bernardins of Toulouse. Meanwhile he receives the tonsure. The Jesuits, keen appreciators of his talent, already seek to enroll their brilliant pupil in their order. They might have succeeded in their design, but a trivial incident occurs to ruin the project. One day, when he is essaying literary production, Marmontel resolves to send to the Floral Games an ode, On the Invention of Gunpowder, which, contrary to his expectations, obtains no success. Vexed at this rebuff, he writes to Voltaire, submitting his work to him, and complaining of "the horrible injustice of the Academy at Toulouse." The illustrious author, always kindly with beginners, consoles Marmontel, encourages him, sends him a copy of his own works, puts him in communication with Vauvenargues, and finally invites him to come to Paris, where he promises him the patronage of M. Orry, the controller-general. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comtesse De Charny, Vol. 2 The marquis had been warned of this fact during the previous night by Cagliostro, and also about nine O'clock in the morning by the assistant superintendent of the prison. The hearing of the case had begun at nine O'clock that morning, and at three O'clock in the afternoon it was still going on. Ever since the doors Opened, the court-room had been thronged by a crowd eager to get a glimpse of the man upon whom sentence of death was to be pronounced; for every one felt that the prisoner's conviction was certain, for in political conspiracies there are unfortunates whose sacrifice is a foregone conclusion. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cinq-Mars or a Conspiracy Under Louis XIII, Vol. 2 of 2 We shall avail ourselves of the same privilege, though without the same genius. N 0 more than he will we seat ourselves upon the tripod of the unities, but merely cast ing our eyes upon Paris and the old dark palace of the Louvre, we will at once pass over the space of two hun dred leagues and the period of two years. Two years! What changes may they not have upon men, upon their families, and above all in that great and so troublous family of nations, whose long alliances a single day suffices to destroy, whose wars are ended by a birth, whose peace is broken by a death! We ourselves have beheld kings returning to their dwell ing on a spring day; that same day a vessel sailed for a voyage of two years. The navigator returned. The kings were seated upon their thrones; nothing seemed to have taken place in his absence, and yet God had deprived those kings of a hundred days of their reign. But nothing was changed for France in 1642, the epoch to which we turn, except her fears and her hopes. The future alone had changed its aspect. Before again beholding our personages, we must contemplate at large the state of the kingdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
