Nottingham gained gas street lighting in 1819. However like all towns in the early 19th century Nottingham was a dirty, unsanitary place. There was a cholera epidemic in 1833, which killed 330 people. However life in 19th century Nottingham gradually improved. In the mid-19th century the piped water supply was taken over by the corporation and was greatly expanded. After 1835 Nottingham had its first proper police force and a new prison was built in 1846. Meanwhile the railway first reached Nottingham in 1839. The first public library in Nottingham opened in 1868 and University College was formed in 1881, when ""Nottingham Old And New"" was published.

Book excerpt: NOTTINGHAM: THE BURIED PAST OF A HISTORIC CITY REVEALED covers the story of the part of the city which was known as Nottingham during Medieval times. It is an accessible read and the ideal book for anyone with a general interest in the history of the city of Nottingham. However, it will also suit professional archaeologists and students alike due to the large amount of previously unpublished material. Key points to be discussed include Nottingham Castle, the churches and friaries of the Medieval period, the Medieval town wall, Nottingham's manmade caves, the industries which took place in Saxon and Medieval times, as well as little known facts such as Nottingham's connections to the Vikings. This book also offers some possible answers to the never before published mysteries which archaeological work has uncovered such as the large burial site in the city centre and a mysterious village or suburb which briefly existed just outside of the city centre in the 14th century. As featured in the Nottingham Post and on BBC Radio Nottingham.

Book A History of Nottingham

Download or read book A History of Nottingham written by Richard Gurnham and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first permanent settlement on the site of the present city of Nottingham was probably a small fortified enclosure built in the seventh or eighth century by Anglo-Saxon invaders, on St Mary's hill, to the east of the area now occupied by St Mary's Church. The strategic importance of the site, commanding crossing points on both the rivers Leen and Trent, was not lost on Danish warlords in the ninth century, nor on Edward the Elder, who recaptured the town from the Danes, greatly strengthened and enlarged its defences, and built the first Trent bridge in A.D. 920. Long before 1066 Nottingham had already become the administrative centre for a county, ruled by a sheriff, and an important market centre for a wide area. William the Conqueror ordered the building of castle at Nottingham and a new 'French' borough quickly grew up under the castle walls, to the west of the existing 'English' borough, plus a large new market. The castle was a favourite of medieval kings, the town was walled, and its wealth in the fifteenth century is indicated today by the magnificent perpendicular parish church of St Mary. During the civil war the castle became a parliamentary garrison but it was demolished in the 1650s. A palace replaced the castle and from the late seventeenth century Nottingham also began to expand as a major manufacturing centre, famous for the production of hosiery and then lace, and from the late nineteenth century for bicycles, pharmaceuticals and cigarettes. But economic growth also brought gross overcrowding, terrible poverty, riots and 'Radical Nottingham'.This fully illustrated account traces the main themes of the town's history from the seventh century to 2010, and brings to life the community in times past. It will be enjoyed by all who are keen to find out more about the place in which they live.
