Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin is poised to emerge as one of the world's most exciting centers of contemporary art. As artists from different countries flock to the new capital of re-unified Germany, its major museums are undergoing a massive renovation while grant programmes and inexpensive studio space are giving new talents the chance to create and display their art. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Phoenix Museum of Art, this catalogue is the first comprehensive survey of the artistic renaissance of post-wall Berlin. Many of the works - which include paintings, sculpture, photography, film, installation sound and performance art - were completed in this century. In addition to colour illustrations of each of the works, this volume includes essays on the Berlin art scene, the city's recent architecture, and what the future may hold for this exciting nexus of creativity.

Book excerpt: Two generations of Inuit artists challenging the parameters of tradition. Kenojuak Ashevak shot to fame in 1970 when Canada Post printed The Enchanted Owl, a print of a black-and-red plumed nocturnal bird, on a postage stamp. She later became known as the magic-marker-wielding "grandmother of Inuit art," famous for her fluid graphic storytelling and her stunning depictions of wildlife. She was a defining figure in Inuit art and one of the first Indigenous artists to be embraced as a contemporary Canadian artist. Ashevak's legacy inspired her nephew, Timootee (Tim) Pitsiulak, to take up drawing at the Kinngait Studios. In his relatively short career, he became a popular figure, known for drawing animal figures with a hunter's precision and capturing the technological presence of the South in Nunavut. Tunirrusiangit, "their gifts" or "what they gave" in Inuktitut, celebrates the achievements of two remarkable artists who challenged the parameters of tradition while consistently articulating a compelling vision of the Inuit world view. Published to coincide with a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario, opening on 16 June and continuing until late August, Tunirrusiangitfeatures more than 60 reproductions of paintings, drawings, and documentary photographs. Completing the book are essays by contemporary artists and curators Jocelyn Piirainen, Anna Hudson, Georgiana Uhlyarik, Koomuatuk Curley, Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory, and Taqralik Partridge that address both the past and future of Inuit identity.

Book Virtual Art

  • Author : Oliver Grau
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2004-09-17

  • Pages : 438 pages

Download or read book Virtual Art written by Oliver Grau and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-09-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the art historical antecedents to virtual reality and the impact of virtual reality on contemporary conceptions of art. Although many people view virtual reality as a totally new phenomenon, it has its foundations in an unrecognized history of immersive images. Indeed, the search for illusionary visual space can be traced back to antiquity. In this book, Oliver Grau shows how virtual art fits into the art history of illusion and immersion. He describes the metamorphosis of the concepts of art and the image and relates those concepts to interactive art, interface design, agents, telepresence, and image evolution. Grau retells art history as media history, helping us to understand the phenomenon of virtual reality beyond the hype. Grau shows how each epoch used the technical means available to produce maximum illusion. He discusses frescoes such as those in the Villa dei Misteri in Pompeii and the gardens of the Villa Livia near Primaporta, Renaissance and Baroque illusion spaces, and panoramas, which were the most developed form of illusion achieved through traditional methods of painting and the mass image medium before film. Through a detailed analysis of perhaps the most important German panorama, Anton von Werner's 1883 The Battle of Sedan, Grau shows how immersion produced emotional responses. He traces immersive cinema through Cinerama, Sensorama, Expanded Cinema, 3-D, Omnimax and IMAX, and the head mounted display with its military origins. He also examines those characteristics of virtual reality that distinguish it from earlier forms of illusionary art. His analysis draws on the work of contemporary artists and groups ART+COM, Maurice Benayoun, Charlotte Davies, Monika Fleischmann, Ken Goldberg, Agnes Hegedues, Eduardo Kac, Knowbotic Research, Laurent Mignonneau, Michael Naimark, Simon Penny, Daniela Plewe, Paul Sermon, Jeffrey Shaw, Karl Sims, Christa Sommerer, and Wolfgang Strauss. Grau offers not just a history of illusionary space but also a theoretical framework for analyzing its phenomenologies, functions, and strategies throughout history and into the future.

Book excerpt: Scottish-born artist Jock Macdonald initially moved to Canada to take up a lecturing position at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, and went on to become a key, formative figure in the Painters Eleven, a group of painters who vigorously promoted abstract painting across Canada. Released to coincide with an ambitious new retrospective exhibition organised by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and the Vancouver Art Gallery, Jock Macdonald: Evolving Form includes contributions by academics and writers including Anna Hudson, Assistant Professor in Canadian Art and Curatorial Studies at York University, Michelle Jacques, Chief Curator at Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Linda Jansma, Senior Curator at The Robert Mclaughlin Gallery, Oshawa and Ian Thom, Senior Curator at Vancouver Art Gallery. Previous publications dedicated to Macdonald's work have not analyzed the artist's use of colour which, as an abstractionist and later a borderline Surrealist, was arguably the most significant part of his practice. In this lavishly illustrated book colour reproductions of Macdonald's works can be seen alongside the writings of leading experts in the field of Canadian art history.
