Download or read book The Best of Brush Country Bull 1977 1980 written by Henry B. Briscoe and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Depression-bred, Texas-style Mark Twain recaptures the life of the Brush Country and the heart of America. The best articles from the "Brush Country Bull" weekly newspaper column (1977-2005) in The Devine News by Henry B. Briscoe. Henry Briscoe had quite a life. It began simply on a Depression-era dairy farm near Devine, Texas, continued at Texas Tech University, and then took a 180-degree turn to the military. In the Air Force, Henry flew transport planes around the world, commanded a squadron in Vietnam, and assisted the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. But that Devine boyhood had a strong hold on him spiny cactus, rattlesnakes, horny toads and all so he settled there when his 25-year Air Force career was over. Soon after his return, Henry organized a deer-hunting contest and wrote an article about it in The Devine News. The town folk loved it, so he wrote another. And another. Thus began "Brush Country Bull," a folksy column that would run weekly for 27 years and recall, denounce, poke fun, and celebrate quite literally, EVERYTHING. With a range as big as Texas, Henry "jawed" about midnight buck hunting, dropping bulldozers on an ice island at the North Pole, making deer sausage, supporting the Devine Fire Department, critiquing elected officials, and learning the names of migrating birds. And that's just a sampling. So git you a good cup of coffee, head on out to that porch swing, and spend a little time with Henry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of all my poems and stories, most of which are true stories and others, a good laugh. My writings are for you, the reader, to enjoy. I have written in the language that cowboys always enjoy. My previous publications include, Downwind n' Cows (Not the best place to be), the Outhouse Reader as bathrooms are hard to find and all the large ranches have them still. Many of my readers have punched a hole in the left topside and hung them in the outhouses with a piece of the twine, I'm not sure they were read or used when the sears catalogue runs out of pages. My last book was called "Horse apples" and was sized too slim in the saddle bag.

Download or read book Andoshen Pa written by Darryl Ponicsan and published by Speaking Volumes. This book was released on with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author of THE LAST DETAIL and CINDERELLA LIBERTY Darryl Ponicsan's fictitious Andoshen, Pa., is 14 real miles from John O'Hara's fictitious Gibbsville, Pennsylvania. In this novel, Ponicsan writes about his pocket of Lantenengo County as he remembers it from his boyhood. He asks his mother to fill in the gaps in his memory and to comment on how things have changed over the years. She volunteers much more information and her letters are reproduced throughout the book. They provide still another focus of the novel itself. Ponicsan chronicles with precise economy the converging lives of the weird but lovable residents of Andoshen: the odd relationship between Shakey the Cop and Thunder Przwalski, town ne'er-do-well; the trouble between Ella Bistricky of Ella’s Lunch and her brother-in-law, R.K., who took five years to get over Rita Hayworth; the love affair between Estelle Wowak. a wrapper-leaf stripper at the cigar factory, and the Reader; the exploits of Duncan, who once gave Willie Mosconi a good game; of Kayo Mackey, who was the only boy ever to hurt Gene Tunney; of Eggshell Oechsle, a primitive existentialist; of Stump Bonomo, Champion of the Tri-County Finger League; of Doc Rice, reluctant dentist; of Jake the Fake, Gyp the Blood, Lemonears Behind the Brewery, and the rest of the boys at Brolly's Bar and the Majestic Pocket Billiards. Andoshen, Pa. is the touching story of a tough, often violent, coal town entirely undermined and sinking more rapidly than the jewel of the Adriatic. The poverty of Andoshen is as rich as that of Tortilla Flat or Cannery Row. It is a new and unique addition to the literary map of the world. DARRYL PONICSAN brings to this novel the same curious, compassionate irony that made his other books, The Last Detail and Goldengrove, so highly acclaimed.
Download or read book Coin of the Realm written by Peyton Hooper Hodge and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete Hodge returns with another lively tale as he faces unforeseen challenges in this ever-changing world. The year is 2011, the real estate market has collapsed, and he can no longer support himself as a small-town dirt lawyer. Desperate for a steady paycheck, he finds work as a foreclosure attorney, persuading himself that he can become the human face of a heartless bank. But Petes new employer, an erratic narcissist who is pathologically obsessed with money, has hired him for the sole purpose of generating fees. Churning out three lawsuits each week, driving hither and yon for hearings and trials, Pete soon finds himself overwhelmed by a job that brings him no joy. Then the bank unwittingly engages him to foreclose against a neighbor, giving him an opportunity to do justice while also pushing back against his boss. Undeterred by the obvious betrayal of his clients interest, Pete files a deeply flawed lawsuit in hopes of giving his neighbor more time to save his home. Shortly thereafter, he discovers that his avaricious employer may be engaged in a more deplorable violation of the professions ethical rules. From that point, it becomes a race to see which one of them can get the other disbarred first . . . and the new boss has a considerable head start. Written in a tone best described as affable outrage, Coin of the Realm portrays a further skirmish in the ongoing battle between the shearers and the shorn.
