Book Oklahoma Winter Black Ice

Download or read book Oklahoma Winter Black Ice written by Cary Osborne and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2017-03-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oklahoma, the state that ranks second as most dangerous in the U.S. when it comes to weather. Too often, the wind comes sweeping down the plain, with a vengeance. In winter, black ice glides onto the roads, barely seen, and when the wheels of a vehicle run onto it, a driver had best beware. It’s winter in Oklahoma, and Sydney St. John finds murder among the papers of the Filmore County Historical Archives. The collection is that of Carl Blair, rancher, politician, father, and husband, who ruled his land and his family without the need for compassion, or love. Although gone these many years, his grandchildren and Lawrence, his only surviving son, still suffer from his cruelty and heavy hand. It's Sydney who must untangle the web that begins with racism and murder. Ben Bartlett her lover, still living in California, is helpless to save her from natural disasters and festering family hatred.

Book Mission Accomplished

Download or read book Mission Accomplished written by Robert Uda and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most returned missionaries say that their missions have been the most rewarding experience of their lifetime. It is no wonder: their maturity, testimony, and knowledge grow phenomenally. There is no greater feeling than to teach, convert, and baptize a new family into the Church. The miraculous changes that occur in people as they accept, live, and progress in the Gospel are worth all of the missionaries' personal sacrifices. If we lovingly encourage and prepare our sons to serve full-time missions, they will accept the challenge. They will happily prepare themselves and look forward with great anticipation to serve the Lord anywhere in the world for two years. If you do the things suggested in Mission Accomplished, you will have successful missionaries who serve honorable missions. You will be showered with never-expected blessings. Indeed, the windows of heaven will open wide to pour out innumerable blessings from on high. I recommend the following to parents of all currently serving missionaries: Pray for them daily Write to them weekly; keep letters positive and encouraging Send them periodic care packages Do not call them unless permitted by the mission president Help them complete an honorable mission If you do these things, you will reap blessings galore. Your missionaries rely on the support they receive from home. They need your support. They look forward to your support. Don't let them down.

Living in a basement apartment in a blue collar town on Long Island, Joe spends his days filling tanks with home heating oil and his nights filling his belly with vodka. But when a young, mentally challenged man who worked for Joe's oil company is cruelly murdered, Joe Serpe rediscovers purpose and grasps for a last chance at redemption. Along with his former Internal Affairs Bureau nemesis, Bob Healy, and Marla Stein, a brave and beautiful, group home psychologist, Joe wades into the world of street gangs, anti-immigration organizations, and the Red Mafia. It is a world of murder and extortion, but one in which an innocent Down's Syndrome girl may hold the key that unlocks the mystery. At the same time, Hose Monkey is a story of salvation and forgiveness . . . a tale of justice done.

Book You Bet Your Life Your Guide to Deadly Risk

Download or read book You Bet Your Life Your Guide to Deadly Risk written by Sheila Buff and published by WW Norton. This book was released on 2022-08-09 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gritty and granular truth behind the wagers we make with our lives every single day—and, if we’re unlucky, just once in a lifetime. What are your chances of living through the next 24 hours? This week? This month? This decade? Will your job kill you? Your car kill you? Your spouse kill you? Will your own bad habits kill you? Or will a rogue asteroid just kill us all? Each time you lay your head on the pillow at night or set your feet on the floor come morning, you bet your life. Exactly what odds do you face 24/7? You Bet Your Life applies to you, the individual, the analytical approach insurance companies use to calculate risk: actuarial science. The result is a comprehensive, encyclopedic, real world assessment of more than 1,000 of the risks we take every day of our all-too-finite lives, from boarding an airplane to tempting a shark attack by dipping a toe in the ocean. You Bet Your Life is introduced by an authoritative essay explaining how professional actuaries calculate risk and how less objective entities—in government, finance, science, technology, and religion—apply their own competing calculi of risk and reward.

Book THE LINDSEYS KANSAS PIONEERS 1855 2024

Download or read book THE LINDSEYS KANSAS PIONEERS 1855 2024 written by Marvin L and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-03-03 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written largely for the benefit of the writers children and grandchildren so they would know something of the life and hardships faced by their pioneering ancestors. It was inspired by their questions about our childhood and youth and their own memories of many visits to the Kansas farms of their grandparents and great grandparents. However, we think many other readers will enjoy learning something about what it was like growing up on a midwestern farm in the 1940s and 50s. A time that was in many ways much simpler but certainly not easy. We had the privilege of knowing personally grandparents and great grandparents who had lived through the many profound changes that occurred around the change of the century. Automobiles, tractors and telephones had only arrived on the farm about 30 years earlier and the grandparents’ barns and garages were still filled with horse-drawn equipment and harnesses from an earlier era. Electricity and graveled roads only occurred after WWII in our memory and running water and indoor bathrooms were still not common on many farms as late as 1955. It was a different and changing world of which we were privileged to be a part. Almost all our relatives lived nearby, and neighbors all knew us and didn’t hesitate to let our parents know if we were up to any mischief. We were expected to take responsibility, work hard, always be truthful, stay out of trouble, study hard and plant straight rows. All are excellent traits that unfortunately are not as valued today as they were then. In the book we have shared some history of the area and some stories of incidents from our lives that were not uncommon among farm families. We hope readers enjoy learning about us and our families.
