Book The Politics of Consolation

Download or read book The Politics of Consolation written by Christina Simko and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What meaning can be found in calamity and suffering? This question is in some sense perennial, reverberating through the canons of theology, philosophy, and literature. Today, The Politics of Consolation reveals, it is also a significant part of American political leadership. Faced with uncertainty, shock, or despair, Americans frequently look to political leaders for symbolic and existential guidance, for narratives that bring meaning to the confrontation with suffering, loss, and finitude. Politicians, in turn, increasingly recognize consolation as a cultural expectation, and they often work hard to fulfill it. The events of September 11, 2001 raised these questions of meaning powerfully. How were Americans to make sense of the violence that unfolded on that sunny Tuesday morning? This book examines how political leaders drew upon a long tradition of consolation discourse in their effort to interpret September 11, arguing that the day's events were mediated through memories of past suffering in decisive ways. It then traces how the struggle to define the meaning of September 11 has continued in foreign policy discourse, commemorative ceremonies, and the contentious redevelopment of the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan.

Book excerpt: Ever since the guns of Gettysburg fell silent, and Lincoln delivered his famous two-minute speech four months after the battle, the story of this three-day conflict has become an American legend. We remember Gettysburg as, perhaps, the biggest, bloodiest, and most important battle ever fought-the defining conflict in American history. But how much truth is behind the legend? In These Honored Dead, Thomas A. Desjardin, a prominent Civil War historian and a perceptive cultural observer, demonstrates how flawed our knowledge of this enormous event has become, and why. He examines how Americans, for seven score years, have shaped, used, altered, and sanctified our national memory, fashioning the story of Gettysburg as a reflection of, and testimony to, our culture and our nation.

Book Memorial Mania

  • Author : Erika Doss
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2012-09-07
  • ISBN : 0226159396

Download or read book Memorial Mania written by Erika Doss and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past few decades, thousands of new memorials to executed witches, victims of terrorism, and dead astronauts, along with those that pay tribute to civil rights, organ donors, and the end of Communism have dotted the American landscape. Equally ubiquitous, though until now less the subject of serious inquiry, are temporary memorials: spontaneous offerings of flowers and candles that materialize at sites of tragic and traumatic death. In Memorial Mania, Erika Doss argues that these memorials underscore our obsession with issues of memory and history, and the urgent desire to express—and claim—those issues in visibly public contexts. Doss shows how this desire to memorialize the past disposes itself to individual anniversaries and personal grievances, to stories of tragedy and trauma, and to the social and political agendas of diverse numbers of Americans. By offering a framework for understanding these sites, Doss engages the larger issues behind our culture of commemoration. Driven by heated struggles over identity and the politics of representation, Memorial Mania is a testament to the fevered pitch of public feelings in America today.

Book excerpt: Never Again! is a heartbreaking story that brings to life the most heinous atrocity perpetrated by Americans against Americans in US history--the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. On May 31 and June 1, thousands of drunk, armed, and newly deputized white citizens invaded Tulsa's thriving Greenwood District, murdered an estimated three hundred Blacks, tortured thousands more, and incinerated nearly forty square blocks of homes, businesses, churches, and other institutions. Susan E. Atkins' work of historical fiction is also about how this horrific tragedy was condoned by most Tulsa civic leaders and then hidden by them and later generations for many years. Never Again! recounts in vivid detail how a star-crossed, interracial couple sparks the Massacre and its immediate aftermath. Events are told through the eyes of two fictional best friends, soul sisters, and courageous fighters for justice. Born after the Massacre, their timeline extends from late 1921 through 2005, when the two women remain disappointed about the lack of justice for victims of the Massacre and their descendants--an appalling circumstance that has yet to be corrected. All proceeds from the sale of Never Again! will be donated to Greenwood Rising, a state-of-the-art interactive exhibition of life before, after, and since the Massacre in Greenwood, the Black Wall Street History Center, Archer and Greenwood Avenues in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
