Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to develop the method of temperature dependent precipitation as a means to modify injection profiles in petroleum reservoirs. A saturated solution is injected into a reservoir at high temperature and allowed to cool. If the chemical has a decreasing solubility with decreasing temperature, the chemical will precipitate in the reservoir. This will plug that part of the reservoir and divert subsequently injected fluids into other regions of the reservoir.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research project is to investigate the effect of temperature dependent precipitation of chemicals on the porosity and permeability of porous rocks. Different core samples are being saturating at different temperatures and are being allowed cool, precipitating the chemical. This technique has applications in enhanced oil recovery processes as a method of plugging high permeability t̀̀hief zones. ̀̀Over the last year the experimental apparatus has been fully commissioned and detailed operating procedures have been developed. A number of preliminary tests have been completed to prove the reliability and repeatability of the system. Three Berea sandstone cores have been successfully treated with potassium carbonate at 260 degrees Fahrenheit. All three cores showed similar reductions in permeability on the order of 50 percent and porosity declines of around 13 percent This level of permeability reduction is greater than early predictions, suggesting that thermal precipitation may be more effective in profile modification than previously thought. A microscopic study of the cores after precipitation using a Scanning Electron Microscope has revealed coating of individual grains and bridging of the pore space by the precipitate. The main series of precipitation experiments is now in progress to examine the full extent of the precipitation for a variety of core types, temperatures, and chemicals.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research project has been to investigate the potential for using temperature-dependent (thermal) precipitation of chemicals to reduce the porosity and permeability of porous rocks. The method consists of injecting hot water that is saturated in a chemical that will precipitate upon cooling. Through this process, the permeability of thief zones in oil reservoirs could be reduced, allowing improved recovery by secondary and tertiary recovery processes. The chemical literature was reviewed for environmentally safe chemicals that have a suitable temperature-dependent solubility for the thermal precipitation process. Four suitable chemicals were identified: boron oxide, potassium carbonate, sodium borate, and potassium chloride. An experimental apparatus was constructed to test the thermal precipitation process at high temperatures and pressures. Data was collected with clastic Berea sandstone cores using two chemicals: potassium carbonate and sodium borate. Data was also collected with limestone cores using potassium carbonate. The porosities and permeabilities were measured before and after being treated by the thermal precipitation process. A theoretical study of the process was also conducted. A model for predicting the fractional reduction in porosity was developed that is based on the temperature-dependent solubility of the chemical used. An empirical model that predicts the fractional reduction in permeability in terms of the fractional reduction in porosity was then developed for Berea sandstone. Existing theoretical models for estimating the permeability of porous media were tested against the measured data. The existing models, including the widely-used Carman-Kozeny equation, underpredicted the reduction in permeability for the thermal precipitation process. This study has shown that the thermal precipitation process has considerable potential for the controlled reduction in porosity and permeability in geologic formations.

We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
