Book excerpt: The first major examination of Anthony van Dyck's work as a portraitist and an essential resource on this aspect of his illustrious career This landmark volume is a comprehensive survey of the portrait drawings, paintings, and prints of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one of the most celebrated portraitists of all time. His supremely elegant style and ability to convey a sense of a sitter's inner life made him a favored portraitist among high-ranking figures and royalty across Europe, as well as among his fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Showcasing the full range of Van Dyck's fascinating international career with more than 100 works, this catalogue celebrates the artist's versatility, inventiveness, and influential approach to portraiture. Works include preparatory drawings and oil sketches that shed light on Van Dyck's working process, prints that allowed his work to reach a wider audience, and grand painted portraits. Some of the masterpieces are drawn from the exceptional holdings of The Frick Collection, while other works are presented here for the first time. Also included are drawings by some of Van Dyck's contemporaries--including his teacher Peter Paul Rubens--that illuminate the lineage of his working method. With insightful contributions by a team of international scholars, this unparalleled study of Van Dyck offers a compelling case for the distinctiveness and importance of the artist's work.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of van Dyck's birth this original new book takes a close look at all aspects of the master's techniques, his subject matter from highly stylized royal portraits to sketches of a beloved dog, and the astonishing modernity of his watercolor landscapes. Through a selection of outstanding paintings and a wide variety of ink and chalk drawings -- several published here for the first time -- Jonathan Glancey's challenging and accessible text explores the relationship of the painter with the different media, and with the artistic conventions of his time. A substantial biography places van Dyck in his historical context and completes a fresh, unorthodox view of this familiar and well-loved artist. Lavishly illustrated in color with numerous details this work casts new light on the image of a painter whose true identity has often been concealed behind the codification of his commissioned oil paintings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genoa completed its transformation from a faded maritime power into a thriving banking center for Europe in the seventeenth century. The wealth accumulated by its leading families spurred investment in the visual arts on an enormous scale. This volume explores how artists both foreign and native created a singularly rich and extravagant expression of the baroque in works of extraordinary variety, sumptuousness, and exuberance. This art, however, has remained largely hidden behind the facades of the city's palaces, with few works, apart from those by the school's great expatriates, found beyond its borders. As a result, the Genoese baroque has been insufficiently considered or appreciated.0Lavishly illustrated, 'A Superb Baroque' is comprehensive, encompassing all the major media and participants. Presented are some 140 select works by the celebrated foreigners drawn to the city and its flourishing environment. Offering three levels of exploration-essays that frame and interpret, section introductions that characterize principal currents and stages, and texts that elucidate individual works-this volume is by far the most extensive study of the Genoese baroque in the English language.00Exhibition: National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, USA (03.05.-16.08.2020) / Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome, Italy (03.10.2020 - 10.01.2021).

Book The Young Van Dyck

Download or read book The Young Van Dyck written by Alejandro Vergara and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrates the early virtuosity of Van Dyck with an in-depth study of the work he produced before the age of twenty-two By the age of twenty-two, Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) had produced more than 160 paintings, many of them ambitious compositions of remarkable quality. This book presents the work created during the eight years between 1613, when he was just fourteen, to his departure for Italy from Antwerp in October 1621. Were the paintings he created during these years his only legacy, he would still be recognized as one of the greatest artists of the seventeenth century. Van Dyck’s precocious talents are brilliantly demonstrated in the many important works reproduced here, among them such strikingly original masterpieces as The Taking of Christ and Saint Jerome in the Desert. Others—Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem and The Lamentation, for example—reveal Van Dyck at his most experimental, in search of new ways of increasing the visual impact of his compositions. Van Dyck was also one of the first painters to rise to the challenge of Rubens’s omnipresent influence, evident in works such as The Crowning with Thorns.
