Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oil-Mixed Portland Cement Concrete The enormous growth of the American Portland cement industry, with. Its production Of 7 barrels Of cement in 1910 and 7 1 barrels in 1911, is striking evidence Of the widespread use Of this deservedly popular material of construction. Combined with sand and stone or gravel in the correct proportions and mixed with the proper amount of water, the resultant product - concrete - is a structural material of perhaps more universal adaptation than any other material now in use. Its application to foundations for heavy machinery, to dams, walls, bridge piers, tunnels, subways, and build ing blocks is well known. When properly reinforced with steel, its use is even more widely extended to the construction Of bridges, vats, sewers, water conduits, and numerous other classes of construction. The farmer has found concrete to be Of material benefit to him in building various farm structures which were formerly made Of more perishable materials._ Thus, when reinforced with steel wire or rods, fence posts may be made with an interminable life and at very low. Cost. It is also exceedingly well adapted to the construction Of water tanks, cisterns, silos, pavements, floors, buildings, feeding troughs, etc. Simplicity and ease of manufacture and manipulation in construction great strength and durability, and comparatively low cost are some of the considerations which render its application so universal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portland Cement: Its Manufacture and Use The following monograph is the outgrowth of a Short course of lectures delivered by me each year to the Junior Engineering students of the State University of Iowa, upon Limes, Mortars and Cements. Owing to the great increase in the amount of Portland cement used and the great value it possesses as a building material, this monograph treats only of the making, testing and using of Portland cement. The term Portland Cement as here used means an artificial cement made by mixing in certain known propor tions, clay and chalk containing silica, alumina, iron, and carbonate of lime, and burning this mixture to; the point of incipient vitrifaction and then reducing this burned product to an impalpable powder. The term Portland Cement primarily means an artificial mixture. The term Natural Portland has very much the same meaning as natural artificial would have. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elasticity of Portland Cement Experiments were made with neat cement and cement mortars composed of three kinds of sand in the proportions of 1 part of sand to 1 of cement; 2 parts of sand to 1 of cement; and 3 parts of sand to 1 of cement. The different kinds of sand used were (a) A good ordinary coarse red sand such as usually used for building purposes. (this was well washed before using.) (b) A poor argillaceous fine sand unwashed; not good enough for ordi nary building purposes; and (0) Fine Laxey gravel; avery coarse sand such as is used for making concrete lintels, etc. The experiments were divided into two distinct sets, throughout each of which one kind of cement was used. The first set was made with cement supplied by Messrs. J. B. White Brothers. The second set was made to supplement the first, special attention being paid to the points where that was incomplete; the cement used for this set was supplied by Messrs. Currie Cc., Liverpool. C F Loweth, Engineer and Superintendent of Bridges and Buildings, that oil disintegrated Portland cement. Briefly the circumstances were as follows: - A two year old neat Portland cement briquette which had been in use in the laboratory as a paper weight was laid aside where it was exposed to occassional drippings of signal oil. In ten months t}' briquette began to disintegrate. Photograph No. 1 shows the effect after being exposed for that period. Book Dragon Portland Cement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dragon Portland Cement Classic Reprint written by Lawrence Portland Cement Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dragon Portland Cement Experiment shows that the character of the sand employed for making the mortar used for concrete blocks, sidewalks, brick masonry, stucco, reinforced concrete, etc., has a vital effect on the resulting product, so that a very careful study of all available sources of supply should always be made whenever a large strue ture is involved or a concern is undertaking the manufacture of cement products on any considerable scale. The strength of the mixture, its rate of set, and the yield obtainable with a given quantity of cement are all found to depend on the nature of the sand employed and very often perfectly good cement has been wrongfully condemned because of trouble which has ultimately been traced to the sand with which the cement was mixed. Extensive experiments have been carried out under the dirce tion of the U. S. Geological Survey and the results obtained are exceedingly instructive if from no other standpoint than the one that few absolutely definite conclusions can be drawn from them. Each sample of sand, gravel and stone screening, was sepa rated into sizes by passing through sieves of the commercial sizes called io, 20, 30, 40, 50, 80, 100 and 200. The results show ing the quantities thus obtained were plotted and analyzed in various ways. The results seemed to indicate that the nearer the grading curve approached a uniform grade line fr0m the finest to the coarsest, the greater was the strength of the mortar obtained. Book A Practical Treatise on Concrete and How to Make It

Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Concrete and How to Make It written by Henry Reid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Concrete and How to Make It: With Observations on the Uses of Cements, Limes and Mortars As it is necessary to understand thoroughly the relative values of the various binding agents used in concrete making, I have endeavoured to give the most reliable information re garding them, so that those desirous of further investigating the subject may command the necessary initiatory knowledge for their purpose. Such information is' of necessity limited; but it may lead to a desire for more accurate knowledge, and thereby disencumber the subj ect of the dogmatism with which it has been generally associated. With that object I have discussed separately the various well-known limes and cements, and have added the necessary analyses and particu lars for the purposes of elucidation, so that a clear under standing of their several properties may be arrived at. The chapters on cement-setting, concrete-mixing, and the machi nery for that purpose, are of more general application, and may be considered as containing useful information on these several branches of the subject. Although the re quired knowledge to use concrete for house building is not very scientific or exact in its character, still the amount of success which may be expected will depend pretty much on the amount of intelligence which may be applied in its preparation. Concrete pipe for sanitary sewers have been used extensively in the cities along the Pacific coast; this in Spite of the fact that the clay interests have attempted, by all possible means, to discredit the use of concrete pipe: We are informed 'that the clay pipe interests have gone so far as to buy the rights to use one of the concrete pipe machines in the state of \vashington, and in some cities have bought the sewer pipe plants and closed them down. The writer recently examined a portion of a con crete pipe sanitary sewer here in Chicago which is said to have been in use 47 years. These pipe were made with natural cement and were in first class con dition. The remainder of this sewer is over a half mile in length, and is laid with the same kind of pipe; and an examination made last year Shows that it is in first class condition.
