Book Harvester of the Sea

Download or read book Harvester of the Sea written by Kurt Ward and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvester of the Sea by Kurt Ward Kurt Ward began his life of adventure as a child – diving for sea life with his father. He continued by joining the Army Rangers for four years and was medically retired as a sergeant. He has also achieved the rank of Skydiving Jump Master, accumulating over 1000 jumps during his time. He eventually returned to his first love – the sea, working as a commercial salvage and underwater construction diver, and then joining the lucrative sea urchin industry. After obtaining a special degree from the College of Oceaneering in San Diego, he began to work in the Gulf of Mexico oil fields after Hurricane Katrina – working his way up to a mixed gas diver, and finally retiring as an operations manager and field supervisor. Harvester of the Sea is a thrilling tale of a man who sought adventure wherever he could – and was well rewarded for his efforts. It tells the true tale of Kurt Ward and his various daredevil exploits – the trials and tribulations of a deep sea diver. Witness his experiences—both exciting and terrifying—with the otherworldly experiences of working beneath the waves, and the people who dedicate their lives to it. This is a book that will thrill as well as stir a deep respect for the sea and that which lies beneath.

Book The Commercial Diver s Handbook

Download or read book The Commercial Diver s Handbook written by Hal Lomax and published by . This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several generations, the U.S. Navy Diving Manual has been considered the Bible of both military and commercial diving, regardless of where in the world these operations were performed. In the past, the U.S. Navy Diver's Handbook was the go-to source for military and commercial divers when they were in the field and did not wish to carry the complete manual with them. The last official printing of the handbook was in 1994, and after that time there was a desperate requirement for a handbook for the commercial diver. Originally published in 2013, The Commercial Diver's Handbook filled that requirement and more. It presented the three most commonly used air decompression tables world-wide, along with mixed gas tables, treatment tables, up-to-date diving medicine, a section on chamber operations, and a section on nitrox operations. Technical editing was performed by CP01 Charles Trombley, Canadian Navy. He was formerly with Canada's Experimental Diving Unit and later retired as Chief Diver, Fleet Diving Unit, Atlantic. This second edition of The Commercial Diver's Handbook has a few changes worth noting. First and foremost is the update of the U.S. Navy Diving Tables from Rev. 6 to 7. Secondly, the size of the book has increased slightly and there is larger print. The decompression tables are now in color for ease of use. As for the chamber medical kits, the handbook now specifies DMAC 15, Revision 4, and the appropriate lists are provided. In addition, the reader will notice other small changes made to keep information current in almost every section, from diving medicine through to emergency medical care. As with the previous edition, this handbook will again prove to be a valuable tool in every commercial diver and supervisor's possession, no matter where in the world they are working.

Book excerpt: Sealab is the underwater Right Stuff: the compelling story of how a US Navy program sought to develop the marine equivalent of the space station—and forever changed man’s relationship to the sea. While NASA was trying to put a man on the moon, the US Navy launched a series of daring experiments to prove that divers could live and work from a sea-floor base. When the first underwater “habitat” called Sealab was tested in the early 1960s, conventional dives had strict depth limits and lasted for only minutes, not the hours and even days that the visionaries behind Sealab wanted to achieve—for purposes of exploration, scientific research, and to recover submarines and aircraft that had sunk along the continental shelf. The unlikely father of Sealab, George Bond, was a colorful former country doctor who joined the Navy later in life and became obsessed with these unanswered questions: How long can a diver stay underwater? How deep can a diver go? Sealab never received the attention it deserved, yet the program inspired explorers like Jacques Cousteau, broke age-old depth barriers, and revolutionized deep-sea diving by demonstrating that living on the seabed was not science fiction. Today divers on commercial oil rigs and Navy divers engaged in classified missions rely on methods pioneered during Sealab. Sealab is a true story of heroism and discovery: men unafraid to test the limits of physical endurance to conquer a hostile undersea frontier. It is also a story of frustration and a government unwilling to take the same risks underwater that it did in space. Ben Hellwarth, a veteran journalist, interviewed many surviving participants from the three Sealab experiments and conducted extensive documentary research to write the first comprehensive account of one of the most important and least known experiments in US history.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up to about 30 years' ago diving activity was centred primarily on the naval services, who provided a lead in the development of equipment, techniques and procedures. Apart from one or two spectacular salvage undertakings, the main commercial activity up until that time was fairly low-key work in docks and harbours. The concept of saturation diving emerged from subsea habitats of which Captain Cousteau was one of the pioneers. This led the way to commercial development in support of exploration and the production of offshore oil and gas, and I believe that my friend Henri Delauze was one of the first to mount the subsea habitat on deck and provide a sealed bell to convey divers from the habitat to the seabed without change of pressure. A remarkable feature of offshore oil and gas technology in the North Sea has been the willingness of all concerned to exchange information regarding R&D. This has had a major effect on the advance in technology over the last few years. As far as diving is concerned, it is to some extent 'Hobson's Choice'. Legal patents are difficult to achieve in this field, and the casual nature of diver employment to date has meant that ideas and techniques circulate almost as freely as the divers themselves. In addition, the advertis ing of the new technologies which one has to offer almost auto matically means disclosure of what otherwise might be secret.

Book Commercial Diving

  • Release : 2015-08-04
  • ISBN : 9781535156790
  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Commercial Diving written by Scott Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's nice to be able to tell people that you're a commercial diver. It's an exciting profession, one that's both physically and mentally demanding, somehow capable of simultaneously being "hands-on" and also intensely cerebral. The substantial amount of money you can make is great too, especially considering how quickly you can be trained. Another nice thing about being a commercial diver is that the profession is expansive and growing. There are commercial divers employed as marine photojournalists, others work for the police department, scouring river bottoms for missing persons. There are specialized divers trained to handle sensitive jobs around hazardous or even nuclear sites. Perhaps the largest employer of commercial divers is the offshore oil rig industry, which employs commercial divers as underwater welders and repairmen who live on the rig for days at a time. This book is designed to provide a comprehensive, detailed, step-by-step guide for individuals interested in pursuing the commercial diving profession. If you want to learn all about what the commercial diving has to offer you, and how you can become a commercial diver, then read on.
