The township was made the unit of study, and was called a community. An investigator would spend two or three days in each township or community, asking specified questions of the leaders of its religious, educational, social, and political institutions. The written record of these interviews were made on uniform blanks, and. Together with the investigator's personal observations, formed the basis for his report upon the conditions existing in the community. The investigators were carefully selected, being either young men of college training or adults of seasoned judgment.
