Book excerpt: First Published in 1906 by the noted historian Archer Butler Hulbert, this excellent work chronicles the events that occurred from the time of Celeron's Expedition through the years of early settlement when canoes and flatboats were the main mode of transportation. Next came the steamboat era when Sternwheelers and Sidewheelers plied up and down the great Ohio River from Pittsburg to the Mississippi. This book is not your average "dry" history book. It is filled with stories and first hand accounts of the people who lived and participated in these events that made the Ohio River a true course to empire. Book River Jordan

Download or read book River Jordan written by Joe William Trotter and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 1998-03-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the nineteenth century, the Ohio River has represented a great divide for African Americans. It provided a passage to freedom along the underground railroad, and during the industrial age, it was a boundary between the Jim Crow South and the urban North. The Ohio became known as the "River Jordan," symbolizing the path to the promised land. In the urban centers of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Evansville, blacks faced racial hostility from outside their immediate neighborhoods as well as class, color, and cultural fragmentation among themselves. Yet despite these pressures, African Americans were able to create vibrant new communities as former agricultural workers transformed themselves into a new urban working class. Unlike most studies of black urban life, Trotter's work considers several cities and compares their economic conditions, demographic makeup, and political and cultural conditions. Beginning with the arrival of the first blacks in the Ohio Valley, Trotter traces the development of African American urban centers through the civil rights movement and the developments of recent years.

Download or read book Ohio River Images written by Russell G. Ryle and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2000-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was it like to live, work, play, and travel along the Ohio River in the early part of the twentieth century? What was the look and feel of the towns and villages that lined its banks in the days before private cars and highways? From 1900 to 1930, the Ohio River was the most economical and reliable mode of transporting goods and people from Cincinnati, Ohio, to Louisville, Kentucky, and to the dozens of towns that lay between. This fascinating pictorial history gives readers a glimpse into the past of this area, and its extensive river heritage. A Sunday cruise down the Ohio River was always enjoyable, but traveling the waters was not always easy. Spring flooding reached far inland, disrupting households and businesses. Pilots' navigational skills were challenged by swiftly-moving water filled with floating debris. Ice wreaked havoc on boats and shore facilities in the winter. Low water in the summer often stopped navigation completely. But the boats were too important to let such difficulties stand in their way. They endured and served the area faithfully until hard economic times and a new reliance on trucks and automobiles ended the packet trade in the early 1930s.

Book The Great Ohio River Flood of 1937

Download or read book The Great Ohio River Flood of 1937 written by James E. Casto and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time settlers first pushed into the Ohio Valley, floods were an accepted fact of life. After each flood, people shoveled the mud from their doors and set about rebuilding their towns. In 1884, the Ohio River washed away 2,000 homes. In 1913, an even worse flood swept down the river. People labeled it the "granddaddy" of all floods. Little did they know there was worse yet to come. In 1937, raging floodwaters inundated thousands of houses, businesses, factories, and farms in a half dozen states, drove one million people from their homes, claimed nearly 400 lives, and recorded $500 million in damages. Adding to the misery was the fact that the disaster came during the depths of the Depression, when many families were already struggling. Images of America: The Great Ohio River Flood of 1937 brings together 200 vintage images that offer readers a look at one of the darkest chapters in the region's history.
