Book Ohio a Photographic Portrait 1935 1941

Download or read book Ohio a Photographic Portrait 1935 1941 written by Carolyn Kinder Carr and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The more than 100 prints in this exhibition represent only a fraction of the approximately 3,000 photographs taken in Ohio for the FSA, yet they provide a synopsis of the work done in Ohio, revealing the nature of the specific assginments and reflecting the individual styles of the photographers. These photographs provide, for the present, a vision of life in Ohio in the waning years of the Deprssion. They remind us that, while prices have changed, social interaction in a small town has not. They suggest that, compared to conditions in the South, in the Oklahoma Dustbowl, and among migrant laborers in California, the poverty in Ohio was neither as intense nor as pervasive. These photographs represent only a fraction of a limitless reality; nevertheless, unique and unparalleled insights lie within this visual microcosm"--Page 7.

Book Daily Life in the United States 1920 1939

Download or read book Daily Life in the United States 1920 1939 written by David E. Kyvig and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1920s and 1930s, changes in the American population, increasing urbanization, and innovations in technology exerted major influences on the daily lives of ordinary people. Explore how everyday living changed during these years when use of automobiles and home electrification first became commonplace, when radio emerged, and when cinema, with the addition of sound, became broadly popular. Find out how worklife, domestic life, and leisure-time activities were affected by these factors as well as by the politics of the time. Details of matters such as the creation of the pickup truck, the development of radio programming, and the first mass use of cosmetics provide an enjoyable read that brings the period clearly into focus. Centering its attention on the broad masses of the population, this animated reference resource emphasizes the wide variety of experiences of people living through The Roaring Twenties and The Great Depression. Readers will be surprised to discover that some of the assumptions we have about the lives of average Americans during these eras are historically inaccurate. A final chapter provides a unique look at six American communities and gives a vivid sense of the diversity of American experience over the course of these tumultuous years.

Book Ben Shahn An Artist s Life

Download or read book Ben Shahn An Artist s Life written by Howard Greenfeld and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-10 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ben Shahn was born in Lithuania in 1898 and emigrated to New York with his family in 1906. Trained as a lithographer, Shahn created social realist paintings of controversial subjects such as Sacco and Vanzetti. He worked as an assistant to Diego Rivera on Rivera’s Rockefeller Center mural, and later created his own public murals in Washington, New York, and New Jersey. In 1935, Walker Evans invited him to join the New Deal’s Farm Security Administration. As a photographer, Shahn documented the Depression in the American South with Evans and Dorothea Lange. During the war years, he worked for the Office of War Information (OWI) producing propaganda posters before returning to painting. Toward the end of his life he worked as a commercial artist, taught and wrote about art, including The Biography of a Painting(1956) and The Shape of Content (1960). Howard Greenfeld's biography is the first complete life of the artist and is illustrated with 90 of his photographs, pictures, and paintings. “Howard Greenfeld’s approach scrupulously balances the personal and the political to provide a rounded portrait... gives a convincing sense of a determined individual making his mark as an immigrant in the turbulent America of depression and war, social upheaval and reaction.” — David Cohen, The New York Times

Book Hope in Hard Times

Download or read book Hope in Hard Times written by Mary Murphy and published by Montana Historical Society. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Rothstein, Russell Lee, John Vachon, and Marion Post Wolcott became some of the United States' best-known photographers through their pictures of Depression-era America. Their assignment, as one of their associates described it, was to have "a long look at the whole vast, complicated rural U.S. landscape with all that was built on it and all those who built and wrecked and worked in it and bore kids and dragged them up and played games and paraded and picnicked and suffered and died and were buried in it." In Montana the four photographers traveled to forty of the state's fifty-six counties, creating a rich record of the many facets of the Depression and recovery: rural and urban, agricultural and industrial, work and play, hard times and the promise of a brighter future. The photographers captured the dignity of Montanans as they struggled to scratch out livings from dried-up fields, nurture families in the shadows of Butte head frames, and foster communities on the vast expanses of the northern plains. Hope in Hard Times, features over 140 Farm Security Administration photographs to illustrate the story of the Great Depression in Montana and the experiences of the photographers who documented it. Today these striking images, from cities like Butte to small towns like Terry, present an unforgettable portrait of a little-studied period in the history of Montana. Selected from the Farm Security Administration Collection at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the photographs in Hope in Hard Times offer viewers an unparalleled look at life in Montana in the years preceding the United States' entry into World War II.
