Book Lucky Man

Download or read book Lucky Man written by Michael J. Fox and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2003-04-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A funny, highly personal, gorgeously written account of what it's like to be a 30-year-old man who is told he has an 80-year-old's disease. "Life is great. Sometimes, though, you just have to put up with a little more crap." -- Michael J. Fox In September 1998, Michael J. Fox stunned the world by announcing he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease -- a degenerative neurological condition. In fact, he had been secretly fighting it for seven years. The worldwide response was staggering. Fortunately, he had accepted the diagnosis and by the time the public started grieving for him, he had stopped grieving for himself. Now, with the same passion, humor, and energy that Fox has invested in his dozens of performances over the last 18 years, he tells the story of his life, his career, and his campaign to find a cure for Parkinson's. Combining his trademark ironic sensibility and keen sense of the absurd, he recounts his life -- from his childhood in a small town in western Canada to his meteoric rise in film and television which made him a worldwide celebrity. Most importantly however, he writes of the last 10 years, during which--with the unswerving support of his wife, family, and friends -- he has dealt with his illness. He talks about what Parkinson's has given him: the chance to appreciate a wonderful life and career, and the opportunity to help search for a cure and spread public awareness of the disease. He is a very lucky man, indeed. The Michael J. Fox Foundation Michael J. Fox is donating the profits from his book to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, which is dedicated to fast-forwarding the cure for Parkinson's disease. The Foundation will move aggressively to identify the most promising research and raise the funds to assure that a cure is found for the millions of people living with this disorder. The Foundation's web site, MichaelJFox.org, carries the latest pertinent information about Parkinson's disease, including: A detailed description of Parkinson's disease How you can help find the cure Public Services Announcements that are aired on network and cable television stations across the country to increase awareness Upcoming related Parkinson's disease events and meetings Updates on recent research and developments

Book excerpt: FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR FICTION In the nine expansive, searching stories of A Lucky Man, fathers and sons attempt to salvage relationships with friends and family members and confront mistakes made in the past. An imaginative young boy from the Bronx goes swimming with his group from day camp at a backyard pool in the suburbs, and faces the effects of power and privilege in ways he can barely grasp. A teen intent on proving himself a man through the all-night revel of J’Ouvert can’t help but look out for his impressionable younger brother. A pair of college boys on the prowl follow two girls home from a party and have to own the uncomfortable truth of their desires. And at a capoeira conference, two brothers grapple with how to tell the story of their family, caught in the dance of their painful, fractured history. Jamel Brinkley’s stories, in a debut that announces the arrival of a significant new voice, reflect the tenderness and vulnerability of black men and boys whose hopes sometimes betray them, especially in a world shaped by race, gender, and class—where luck may be the greatest fiction of all.

Written by Kevin O’Keefe in the 1970s and 80s, these poems explore feelings about change and death, love and loss, beauty and pain, and grief for a lost childhood. This collection interweaves structured and free verse poetry in playful variety. The resulting posthumous collection reveals a man both grappling with depression and possessed of an abundant literary imagination: I could see you clearly in my dreams Like smoke in the spotlight Or dust in streaks of sunlight You were there Slipping out of shadows into my vision Passing through discretely Existing only briefly –“Salubria” At some times joyful and reverent, at other times bleak and foreboding, For One Who Chose to Die offers insight into the mind of someone struggling to find their place in the world. This book will particularly resonate with anyone who has struggled with their mental health or is close to someone who has.

Book excerpt: Caterina Cammino is an attractive and reclusive thirty-five-year-old woman whose nightly ritual is to go to the beach and drink wine from the bar of her car. Though alcohol is her crutch and companion, it cant erase the memory of the summer of 1988 when she lost her innocence--and awoke to a scream. Tyler Beck is an intellectually gifted eighteen-year-old loner who has an invisible, magical cord above his right shoulder; he is also a former drug addict who was rehabilitated with the help of a counselor named Robie. After Robie dies, however, a distraught Beck exits his friends funeral and seeks refuge at the beachand in heroin. Their lives collide when Caterinas car strikes a trashcan that crashes into the semi-conscious Beck. When they both ask aloud for help, the grieving parts of themselves are transported to another dimension called 10-17. Caterina arrives in this dimension as her seventeen-year-old self, Cat, and there she meets Beck, whom she nicknames Ty. Once in this new world, set against a backdrop of Italy, they meet a Watcher named Miranda who tells them that they are in 10-17 for healing, even while their parallel lives are continuing on Earth. Miranda explains that the dimensions are spaced like slats on a window blind; she also tells the teenagers about a place called Thare, an Earth-like dimension populated by humans, but without suffering or addiction. While Beck readily embraces his love for the mature Caterina, she is conflicted over her feelings for a man half her age. Meanwhile, in Dimension 10-17, as Cat and Ty complete their lesson, they are torn over the choice that Miranda offers them: To go to the perfect world of Thare and leave the Earth and their families behind, or to return wholly to their Earthly selves...

Book excerpt: “Evokes the gritty classics of Cornell Woolrich and Jim Thompson while spinning its own brand of hard-boiled psychological suspense.” —Kirkus Reviews Three years ago, working vice for the NYPD, Dan Champion infiltrated a world of sexual obsession and perversity. He broke the case, but the case also broke him. He started taking drugs and soon began to form hallucinations . . . a dead child prowling the streets of New York . . . a beautiful woman named Samantha who would have given him the love he always wanted—if she’d only been real. Now the ghosts and hallucinations are finally behind Champion, as he begins to rebuild his life as a small town detective. Then one night he is called to examine the body of a woman who has washed ashore. Yet when he looks at her face, he sees that it’s Samantha, the woman he dreamed about long ago . . . a woman who doesn’t exist. Suddenly, Champion must figure out the truth about his past and about a killer who has been on the run—in the wind—for a lifetime. The ghosts of the dead are all around him, and Champion has to find out who murdered them, fast, or he could become one of them himself. “After reading his latest, A Killer in the Wind, I came away convinced that Klavan is worthy to be mentioned with Keith Ablow, Jonathan Kellerman, Andrew Vachss, James Patterson, and even Stephen King.” —The Huntington News
