Download or read book Oh to be a Marching Girl written by Frances Whiting and published by Pan Australia. This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irreverent, irrepressible, laugh-out-loud read about life and love, family and friends, Oh To Be A Marching Girl is a collection of Frances's best columns from the Sunday Mail.Frances spent much of her childhood talking her mother into allowing her to sign up for classes, courses, sports, none of which she managed to complete. As well as Oh to be a marching girl, her repertoire at that time included I want to be an actress, I have to be a painter and I'll die if I'm not a gymnast. Luckily, she did none of these things, but instead became a writer-one who has a rare knack of truly communicating with readers.Women, men, relationships, family, work, politicians and celebrities are all explored and, whatever the topic, readers will find something of themselves-and each other-in every chapter. Most of all, Oh To Be A Marching Girl reminds us that while laughing at other people is always fun, laughing at ourselves is much, much better.
Download or read book Walking on Trampolines written by Frances Whiting and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praised as “a tender exploration of friendship, families, and first love” (Liane Moriarty, New York Times bestselling author of The Husband’s Secret), this coming-of-age novel from bestselling author Frances Whiting is equal parts heartwarming, accessible, and thought provoking. “Tallulah de Longland,” she said slowly, letting all the Ls in my name loll about lazily in her mouth before passing judgment. “That,” she announced, “is a serious glamorgeous name.” From the day Annabelle Andrews sashays into her classroom, Tallulah ‘Lulu’ de Longland is bewitched: by Annabelle, by her family, and by their sprawling, crumbling house tumbling down to the river. Their unlikely friendship intensifies through a secret language where they share confidences about their unusual mothers, first loves, and growing up in the small coastal town of Juniper Bay. But the euphoria of youth rarely lasts, and the implosion that destroys their friendship leaves lasting scars and a legacy of self-doubt that haunts Lulu into adulthood. Years later, Lulu is presented with a choice: remain the perpetual good girl who misses out, or finally step out from the shadows and do something extraordinary. And possibly unforgivable… It’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce.

Download or read book The Story of Rose O Neill written by Miriam Forman-Brunell and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most of us, Rose O'Neill is best known as the creator of the Kewpie doll, perhaps the most widely known character in American culture until Mickey Mouse. Prior to O'Neill's success as a doll designer, however, she already had earned a reputation as one of the best-known female commercial illustrators. Her numerous illustrations appeared in America's leading periodicals, including Life, Harper's Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan. While highly successful in the commercial world, Rose O'Neill was also known among intellectuals and artists for her contributions to the fine arts and humanities. In the early 1920s, her more serious works of art were exhibited in galleries in Paris and New York City. In addition, she published a book of poetry and four novels. Yet, who was Rose Cecil O'Neill? Over the course of the twentieth century, Rose O'Neill has captured the attention of journalists, collectors, fans, and scholars who have disagreed over whether she was a sentimentalist or a cultural critic. Although biographers of Rose O'Neill have drawn heavily on portions of her previously unpublished autobiography, O'Neill's own voice--richly revealed in her well-written manuscript--has remained largely unheard until now. In these memoirs, O'Neill reveals herself as a woman who preferred art, activism, and adventure to motherhood and marriage. Featuring photographs from the O'Neill family collection, The Story of Rose O'Neill fully reveals the ways in which she pushed at the boundaries of her generation's definitions of gender in an effort to create new liberating forms.

Download or read book Music in The Girl s Own Paper An Annotated Catalogue 1880 1910 written by Judith Barger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteenth-century British periodicals for girls and women offer a wealth of material to understand how girls and women fit into their social and cultural worlds, of which music making was an important part. The Girl's Own Paper, first published in 1880, stands out because of its rich musical content. Keeping practical usefulness as a research tool and as a guide to further reading in mind, Judith Barger has catalogued the musical content found in the weekly and later monthly issues during the magazine's first thirty years, in music scores, instalments of serialized fiction about musicians, music-related nonfiction, poetry with a musical title or theme, illustrations depicting music making and replies to musical correspondents. The book's introductory chapter reveals how content in The Girl's Own Paper changed over time to reflect a shift in women's music making from a female accomplishment to an increasingly professional role within the discipline, using 'the piano girl' as a case study. A comparison with musical content found in The Boy's Own Paper over the same time span offers additional insight into musical content chosen for the girls' magazine. A user's guide precedes the chronological annotated catalogue; the indexes that follow reveal the magazine's diversity of approach to the subject of music.
