Book The Gang s All Queer

Download or read book The Gang s All Queer written by Vanessa R. Panfil and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people believe that gangs are made up of violent thugs who are in and out of jail, and who are hyper-masculine and heterosexual. Vanessa Panfil introduces us to a different world. Meet gay gang members - sometimes referred to in popular culture as "homo thugs" - whose gay identity complicates criminology's portrayal and representation of gangs, gang members, and gang life. In vivid detail, Panfil provides an in-depth understanding of how gay gang members construct and negotiate both masculine and gay identities through crime and gang membership. She draws from interviews with over 50 gay gang- and crime-involved young men in Columbus, Ohio, the majority of whom are men of color in their late teens and early twenties, as well as on-the-ground ethnographic fieldwork with men who are in gay, hybrid, and straight gangs. Panfil provides an eye-opening portrait of how even members of straight gangs are connected to a same-sex oriented underground world. Most of these young men still present a traditionally masculine persona and voice deeply-held affection for their fellow gang members. They also fight with their enemies, many of whom are in rival gay gangs. Most come from impoverished, 'rough' neighborhoods, and seek to defy negative stereotypes of gay and Black men as deadbeats, though sometimes through illegal activity. Some are still closeted to their fellow gang members and families, yet others fight to defend members of the gay community, even those who they deem to be "fags, " despite distaste for these flamboyant members of the community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Book excerpt: A LITTLE UPRISING: For decades, Upstate and Downstate New York threatened to secede from one another, but the secession movement never amounted to anything more than a heated debate ... until 2019. That's when a bizarre story about missing tanks surfaces on social media. A 20-year-old picture of National Guard tanks driving down the Adirondack Northway generates wild conspiracy theories. The viral photo touches off a chain of events that infuriates residents in the Adirondacks. When the Governor uses strongarm tactics to silence them, the Mayors of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse step into the fray. There are a few isolated incidents of violence. The Governor overreacts. He creates a special police force to quash the unrest. Their heavy-handed tactics exacerbate the situation. The Governor’s “Empire Police” clash with the State Police and the National Guard. The tanks -- which went missing twenty years earlier during the Y2K scare -- are rumored to be in a remote County in the Adirondacks. Allegedly, they were diverted there by Iraq War vets who were suspicious of the redeployment of all Upstate New York’s National Guard tanks to downstate armories. The Governor unleashes his “Empire Police” on Upstate New York ... and gets more than he bargained for.

Book excerpt: What''s Wrong with Black Women? is one black man''s story of the bitter downside of black romance. The thin line between love and hate has been crossed and then some! The faint of heart or ultra sensitive would do well to avoid this frenetic mixture of rage, passion, street-life observations, and at times, tragic revelations about what the author says are bad black women who are destroying good black men. Maddox'' sincere and brutal frankness cuts through the reader like a chainsaw through Swiss cheese! ! If you can''t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen. Book excerpt: He's sworn off women for the wrong reasons. She doesn’t know that she’s the right reason. As tinsel hangs from Christmas trees, Chad figures it out…but will it be before he hears his star patient flatline? No, don’t even talk to me about it. I’m a heart surgeon, not some fly-by-night playboy that sleeps with every chick that I meet. In fact, I don’t even date, not that my schedule suggests it, anyway. Especially when I’m playing double-time, dressing up as Santa Claus for the hospital, and for the Ford brothers. But when Ginger comes into the picture, showing up seemingly to meet with her nurse friend, India, there are moments when I wish that she was more than just a coworker’s pal. When she witnesses me at a weak moment, she sees something in me that nobody else has seen before. And then I learn something about her that both freaks me out and makes me wonder why God hasn’t brought her to me sooner…and I don’t know how to deal with it. *** I fly to Sweden with him, even though India tells me I’m crazy. But it’s for business, as I keep telling myself. It’s always been about business with me, and, evidently, with Chad, too. Until we do something akin to a movie scene about the mile high club, and all bets are off. Chad doesn’t want me any more than I want him. We both have our careers to think about, and he has the added bonus of trying to save lives. But something has crossed over in both of us, and there’s no turning back. Except when someone’s heart is at stake…and this time Chad doesn’t know how to fix it…because it’s not something that can be fixed with surgery, since it’s a matter of the heart…and it’s his own heart, too. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!
