Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ã’sun is a brilliant deity whose imagery and worldwide devotion demand broad and deep scholarly reflection. Contributors to the ground-breaking Africa's Ogun, edited by Sandra Barnes (Indiana University Press, 1997), explored the complex nature of Ogun, the orisa who transforms life through iron and technology. Ã’sun across the Waters continues this exploration of Yoruba religion by documenting Ã’sun religion. Ã’sun presents a dynamic example of the resilience and renewed importance of traditional Yoruba images in negotiating spiritual experience, social identity, and political power in contemporary Africa and the African diaspora. The 17 contributors to Ã’sun across the Waters delineate the special dimensions of Ã’sun religion as it appears through multiple disciplines in multiple cultural contexts. Tracing the extent of Ã’sun traditions takes us across the waters and back again. Ã’sun traditions continue to grow and change as they flow and return from their sources in Africa and the Americas.

Book Political Economy of Resource Human Security and Environmental Conflicts in Africa

Download or read book Political Economy of Resource Human Security and Environmental Conflicts in Africa written by Kelechi Johnmary Ani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows the push and pull effects between resources, human security and conflicts in Africa. It recognizes the need for resources in Africa to be processed into finished goods in order to influence global market and redefine the pattern of trade relations with powerful countries of Asia, America and Europe in shaping the destiny and future of African countries. The achievement of this laudable objective is plagued by the security challenges which are directly or indirectly linked to resource-related conflicts rocking most of the resource endowed countries in the continent, thereby threatening global peace and security. To deal with this menace in the continent, it requires global co-operation and support of foreign governments, international organizations, international non-government organizations, governments of host countries and its citizens. The book presents the cases and experiences of countries that are endowed with resource, as well as have experienced different forms of human insecurity and have witnessed environmental conflicts in its analysis, which make the discourse interesting and quite educating.

Book African Democratization and Military Coups

Download or read book African Democratization and Military Coups written by Chuka Onwumechili and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-10-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Onwumechili provides an exciting perspective on African military coups and reminds us that democracy is not synonymous solely with Western societies. He examines democracies in traditional Africa and shows how these socieites clearly defined and limited the roles of traditional African armies. From this background, Onwumechili makes readers appreciate that modern African armies are deviant institutions, with no roots in traditional Africa. Rather, he argues, one has to seek those roots in Africa's recent, colonial history. Dr. Onwumechili goes on to describe the reasons for coups and their tactics. Finally, he examines how military coups can be prevented. While previous solutions have largely failed, Onwumechili provides convincing solutions based on case studies.

Book Criminal Resistance

Download or read book Criminal Resistance written by Temitope B. Oriola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crude oil extraction in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria generates 96% of all foreign earnings and 85% of state revenues, making it crucial to the survival of the Nigerian state. Several generations of state neglect, corruption and mismanagement have ensured that the Delta region is one of the most socio-economically and politically deprived in the country. By the late 1990s there was a frightening proliferation of armed gangs and insurgent groups. Illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, disruption of oil production activities, riots, and demonstrations intensified and in 2003, insurgents began kidnapping oil workers at a frenetic pace. In late 2005, an uber-insurgent movement 'organization' was formed in Nigeria. Christened the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), it operates as an amorphous, multifaceted amalgam of insurgent groups with an unprecedented clinical precision in execution of intents. By focussing on kidnappings that are putatively connected to the struggle for emancipating the Niger Delta, Oriola makes the case for analysing MEND as a social movement organization, rather than a terrorist or criminal gang by showing how political processes shape kidnappings in the Delta. The use of violent repertoires of contention has not garnered sufficient attention in the social movement literature, despite the fact that that around the world, many similar groups are adopting violent tactics without necessarily eschewing non-violent techniques. Based on multi-actor research, including interviews and focus group discussions with community members, military authorities, 42 ex-insurgents directly involved in illegal oil bunkering and kidnapping, and official email statements from 'Jomo Gbomo', the spokesperson of MEND, this book will be of interest to sociologists, political scientists and peace and security studies scholars.

Book Asagba

Download or read book Asagba written by Ifeoha Azikiwe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His life is eventful as it is remarkable. He is a legend, an icon of all ages, a visionary born with royal blood in his spine and silver spoon to scoop. At a time blacks were regarded as sub-human, he suffered racial prejudice in Europe. Back home as a university lecturer, he was placed on a miserable salary, 60% less than his foreign counterparts. He rejected the offer, but driven by patriotism, he worked assiduously for nine months without pay. And he won the battle. Professor Joseph Chike Edozien was implicated at the outset of the Nigerian civil war, targeted as a culprit but smuggled out through the rough terrain of the Camerouns to Paris, France. The war changed his focus and made him a refugee. However, he remained undaunted. His professorial portfolio at hand, Edozien proceeded to the prestigious MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. From there he moved to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Chike Edoziens educational attainments span through Africa, Europe, America and Asia with far-reaching global impact on humanity. The first Nigerian and African dean of the faculty of medicine, University of Ibadan, Edozien won international laurels in medical education and research, capped with a bibliography of 45 citations. And from the ivory towers of Chapel Hill, he ascended the coveted throne as the 13th Asagba of Asaba. The nonagenarian deprecates the vices that impede Nigerias greatness; the twin devil of bribery and corruption, tribalism, lack of national consciousness, over-concentration of power and resources at the centre, and above all, absence of true federalism. He paints a gloomy picture of a nation wallowing in utter backwardness, and regrets that we have lost our traditional values completely, with Christianity at the base of our collective ethical decadence.

Book Global Trade and Cultural Authentication

Download or read book Global Trade and Cultural Authentication written by Joanne B. Eicher and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Trade and Cultural Authentication, edited by Joanne Eicher, showcases the complexity and enduring aesthetic and ingenuity of Kalabari artisans. The Kalabari people, most of whom make their homes in the eastern Niger Delta region of western Africa, are renowned for the artistry in working with globally imported textiles and dress for centuries. The 22 essays in this edited volume feature the work of leading Nigerian and American scholars and offer an in-depth, nuanced understanding of Kalabari textiles, aesthetics, and engagement with past and present global trade networks. Using dress and textiles as a lens, Global Trade and Cultural Authentication explores the Kalabari people's centuries-long role in the global trade arena. Their economic interconnectedness demonstrates that Africa was never a "dark continent" but, rather, critically involved in a global trade built around Kalabari resourcefulness and imagination.
