Book Global Energy Policy and Security

Download or read book Global Energy Policy and Security written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite efforts to increase renewables, the global energy mix is still likely to be dominated by fossil-fuels in the foreseeable future, particularly gas for electricity and oil for land, air and sea transport. The reliance on depleting conventional oil and natural gas resources and the geographic distribution of these reserves can have geopolitical implications for energy importers and exporters. Global Energy Policy and Security examines the security of global and national energy supplies, as well as the sensitivity and impacts of sustainable energy policies which emphasize the various political, economic, technological, financial and social factors that influence energy supply, demand and security. Multidisciplinary perspectives provide the interrelated topics of energy security and energy policy within a rapidly changing socio-political and technological landscape during the 21st century. Included are two main types of interdisciplinary papers. One set of papers deals with technical aspects of energy efficiency, renewable energy and the use of tariffs. The other set of papers focuses on social, economic or political issues related to energy security and policy, also describing research, practical projects and other concrete initiatives being performed in different parts of the world. This book will prove useful to all those students and researchers interested in the connections between energy production, energy use, energy security and the role of energy policies.

Book Fixing Fuel Poverty

  • Author : Brenda Boardman
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2013-05-13
  • ISBN : 1136545727
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Fixing Fuel Poverty written by Brenda Boardman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in the early 90s, Brenda Boardman's Fuel Poverty has been the reference text for those wishing to learn about this complex subject. In this, its successor, she turns a critical eye to the new millennium and finds that the situation, while now more widely recognised, is far from having improved. The book begins by discussing the political awakening to the issue and exploring just who constitutes the fuel poor. It examines the factors that contribute to fuel poverty - low incomes, high fuel prices and poor quality housing - and looks at and evaluates the policies that have been employed to help reduce the problem. The latter part presents a detailed set of proposals based around long-term improvements in the housing stock that must be employed if we are to avoid a dire situation continuing to get worse. Based on detailed analysis of the situation in the UK, the growth of fuel poverty (sometimes called energy poverty) in other countries and the new focus in European policy makes the book timely and provides important lessons for those who now have to produce policies to tackle the issues.

Book Harnessing Renewable Energy in Electric Power Systems

Download or read book Harnessing Renewable Energy in Electric Power Systems written by Boaz Moselle and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2010 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting its reliance on fossil fuels, the electric power industry produces the majority of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. The need for a revolution in the industry becomes further apparent given that 'decarbonization' means an increasing electrification of other sectors of the economy'in particular, through a switch from gasoline to electric vehicles. Of the options for producing electric power without significant greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy is most attractive to policymakers, as it promises increased national self-reliance on energy supplies and the creation of new industries and jobs, without the safety and political concerns of nuclear power or the unproven technology of carbon capture and storage. Drawing on both economic theory and the experiences of the United States and EU member states, Harnessing Renewable Energy addresses the key questions surrounding renewable energy policies. How appropriate is the focus on renewable power as a primary tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions? If renewable energy is given specific support, what form should that support take? What are the implications for power markets if renewable generation is widely adopted? Thorough and well-evidenced, this book will be of interest to a broad range of policymakers, the electric power industry, and economists who study energy and environmental issues.

  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Pre budget Report 2008 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Treasury Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treasury Committee's report on the Pre-Budget Report 2008 (Cm. 7484, ISBN 9780101748421) considers that the balance of risks to the Treasury's forecast, for a swift recovery in economic growth for 2010 after a significant decline in output in 2009, is on the downside. The report highlights the lack of bank lending as the single most critical problem for the economy in the near term. The overall effect of the fiscal stimulus remains uncertain, the cost of the reduction in VAT is considerable and, in the view of the majority of commentators, the Treasury's analysis of its impact is an optimistic one. The report notes that the risk of a self-reinforcing deflationary cycle exists in the UK economy at present and recommends that the Treasury prepare and publish the actions it may consider taking should a period of "quantitative easing" be needed. While the need for lower interest rates to maintain economic growth is crucial at the present time, the needs of savers must not be forgotten and the Treasury should consider measures that will also support savers at this difficult time. The report notes with concern that the Pre-Budget Report contains no policy measures which will significantly advance meeting the 2010 child poverty target.

Book European Energy Markets Observatory 2009

Download or read book European Energy Markets Observatory 2009 written by Colette Lewiner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleventh edition of the European Energy Markets Observatory covers the full year 2008 and the winter 2008/2009. Key messages developed in the report: -The crisis has put the Utilities sector under pressure and challenged the resilient character attributed to the Utilities sector. -Security of supply has improved in electricity, little progress was observed in gas. -Contrasted progress towards a single electricity and gas market. - Even if the European Union is the only region with a clear policy on climate change, more efforts need to be implemented. -The crisis has revealed the need for deeper Utilities business models changes: Utilities need to lower their “cost to serve” and distribution costs, adapt to new customer relationship, streamline and simplify their organizations, processes and IT to increase efficiency, manage their strategic resources and take advantage of new technologies.

Book The Energy Security Climate Nexus

Download or read book The Energy Security Climate Nexus written by C. Kuzemko and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the advent of important crises of both climate change and energy supply (in)security, questions are being asked about changes in energy governance. Caroline Kuzemko explains how and why change takes place and discusses the convoluted UK energy governance system that has emerged between 2000 and the present day. She applies a complex theoretical approach based on new institutional concepts of policy paradigm change, but which also utilises concepts of (de)politicisation and securitization. UK energy governance, like energy policy elsewhere, is moving from one heavily influenced by neoliberal economic ideas to one where state intervention is more commonplace. Moreover, the new governance system is informed not by one but by multiple perspectives on energy and governance geopolitical, climate change and pro-market.
