Download or read book Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas of the Scotian Shelf and Environs written by Penny Doherty and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific expert opinion was gathered to contribute to the identification of ecologically and biologically significant areas (EBSAs) on the Scotian Shelf. Participants were asked to identify areas of particularly high ecological significance based on the EBSA criteria (uniqueness, aggregation, fitness consequences, naturalness, resilience), delineate the approximate boundaries of each area on a map, and provide justification for selecting each area. In addition, interviews with scientific experts were conducted to help fill gaps related to EBSA identification that were identified.

Book Mapping Areas of High Phytoplankton Biomass in the Offshore Component of the Scotian Shelf Bioregion

Download or read book Mapping Areas of High Phytoplankton Biomass in the Offshore Component of the Scotian Shelf Bioregion written by César Fuentes-Yaco and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this document is to identify phytoplankton-rich areas in the Scotian Shelf Bioregion, designated as areas of persistent elevated chlorophyll concentration detected by remote sensing. Regions that contain comparatively higher biomass than surrounding areas are considered Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas under the Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Aggregation criterion and possibly the Convention on Biological Diversity Biological Productivity criterion, so they can be considered in Marine Protected Area network development for the Scotian Shelf Bioregion (DFO 2014).

Book A Description of the Habitats and Special Natural Features Within the Scotian Slope Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area in the Maritimes Region

Download or read book A Description of the Habitats and Special Natural Features Within the Scotian Slope Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area in the Maritimes Region written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The descriptions found within this report will thereby supplement the descriptions of the multiple slope EBSAs found within the offshore EBSA Science Advisory Report (DFO 2014a), and may aid in the identification of other discrete EBSAs along the slope, or in the refinement of the existing EBSAs. [...] For the purpose of this report, the "Scotian Slope" is defined as the portion of sea floor and water column (from surface to bottom) found between the edge of the Scotian Shelf (200m) and the Scotian Rise (approximately 3000m; Han 2007; DFO 2014a), including the Eastern Scotian Shelf Canyons, Northeast Channel, Laurentian Channel Slope, and Stone Fence and Laurentian Environs EBSAs (Figure 2). [...] In the east and along the slope off George's Bank, presence of canyons induces tidal currents and vertical mixing (Bell 1975; Baines 1982, 1983), and the transportation of wave energy from the open ocean onto the shelf (Gordon and Marshall 1976). [...] Generally, the upper slope is complex and sand-filled in the east, and relatively flat and sand and gravel-filled in the west, while the lower slope consists mainly of bioturbated mud and sand transported down-slope by canyons and channels (Piper and Campbell 2002). [...] The Shelf-Edge Current (a branch of the Labrador Current) flows into the Laurentian Channel along the eastern edge and flows back out along the western wall of the channel and then southwest along the shelf edge (Figure 3; see also Brickman and Drozdowski 2012; Brickman et al.

Book Marine Conservation Ecology

Download or read book Marine Conservation Ecology written by John Roff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major textbook provides a broad coverage of the ecological foundations of marine conservation, including the rationale, importance and practicalities of various approaches to marine conservation and management. The scope of the book encompasses an understanding of the elements of marine biodiversity - from global to local levels - threats to marine biodiversity, and the structure and function of marine environments as related to conservation issues. The authors describe the potential approaches, initiatives and various options for conservation, from the genetic to the species, community and ecosystem levels in marine environments. They explore methods for identifying the units of conservation, and the development of defensible frameworks for marine conservation. They describe planning of ecologically integrated conservation strategies, including decision-making on size, boundaries, numbers and connectivity of protected area networks. The book also addresses relationships between fisheries and biodiversity, novel methods for conservation planning in the coastal zone and the evaluation of conservation initiatives.

Book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of National and Regional Ocean Policies written by Biliana Cicin-Sain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook, prepared by leading ocean policy academics and practitioners from around the world, presents in-depth analyses of the experiences of fifteen developed and developing nations and four key regions of the world that have taken concrete steps toward cross-cutting and integrated national and regional ocean policy. All chapters follow a common framework for policy analysis. While most coastal nations of the world already have a variety of sectoral policies in place to manage different uses of the ocean (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas development), in the last two decades, the coastal nations covered in the book have undertaken concerted efforts to articulate and implement an integrated, ecosystem-based vision for the governance of ocean areas under their jurisdiction. This includes goals and procedures to harmonize existing uses and laws, to foster sustainable development of ocean areas, to protect biodiversity and vulnerable resources and ecosystems, and to coordinate the actions of the many government agencies that are typically involved in oceans affairs. The book highlights the serious conflicts of use in most national ocean zones and the varying attempts by nations to follow the prescriptions emanating from the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention and the outcomes of the 1992, 2002, and 2012 sustainable development summits. The interrelationship among uses and processes in the coast and ocean requires that ocean governance be integrated, precautionary, and anticipatory. Overall, the book provides a definitive state-of-the-art review and analysis of national and regional ocean policies around the world.

Download or read book Gully written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gully, a large submarine canyon east of Sable Island on the eastern Scotian Shelf, is a feature which has been described as a unique ecological site and valued component of Atlantic Canadian coastal waters . Its suspected uniqueness and biological significancehas attracted the attention of a wide range of government agencies, researchers, ocean resource industries and conservationists . The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has as one of its mandates the identification of sensitive marine areas and the development of a strategy for their conservation ; the Gully is one such area which DFO has been asked to evaluate . As a first step in developing a Conservation Strategy for the Gully, DFO coordinated a thorough scientific review of the region to establish the state of knowledge of its environment and ecosystem and to place that information in the context of the greater Scotian Shelf system . Thirty-two scientific experts from DFO, other federal natural resources departments, universities and other NGOs contributed to the Gully Science Review which describes what is presently known about the regions geology, oceanography, benthos, fish, seabirds and mammals. In addition to summarizing what is known about the region's environment and ecosystem, the review also identifies information gaps and outlines future research needs.
