EDITOR'S PREFACE The purpose of this book is to provide a fairly broad survey of the Swedish legal system. In order to avoid possible disappointment, it would seem important to make clear from the outset what kind of questions the authors propose to answer and what groups of readers they are addressing. The easiest way to do this is to set out what we are not purporting to do. Thus, the book is not intended to serve as a primer for students who possess no knowledge of "the law", i. e. of the concepts, ideas and solutions of at least one legal system. Nor is it the purpose of the authors to give practitioners the kind of precise, techni cal answers to isolated questions that they need when advising their clients on the proper course of action in business, or litigation, con ducted within the framework of the legal system described.

Book excerpt: This book offers a foreign reader an overview and understanding of the most important aspects of the law and legal system in Sweden, from the legal institutions to more specific topics such as contract law, tort law and family law. These presentations are not exhaustive but rather meant to give the reader a sufficient enough understanding to be somewhat orientated in the Swedish legal system. Book excerpt: The present book is an updated version of the very favourably received book Swedish Law in the New Millennium, published in 2000. It contains a summary presentation of the Swedish legal system, written by leading Swedish experts in their respective legal fields. It is intended to be used by foreign law students participating in introductory courses in Swedish law, foreign legal professionals looking for fundamental information about the Swedish approach to a particular legal problem and Swedish lawyers when communicating with foreign colleagues. While the book can be read from cover to cover, each chapter can also be read independently. The space constraints make simplification unavoidable, but at the end of each chapter there is a bibliographical notice providing suggestions for further reading.

Book Two Books of the Elements of Universal Jurisprudence

Download or read book Two Books of the Elements of Universal Jurisprudence written by Samuel Freiherr von Pufendorf and published by . This book was released on 2009-02-27 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was Pufendorf's first work, published in 1660. Its appearance effectively inaugurated the modern natural-law movement in the German-speaking world. The work also established Pufendorf as a key figure and laid the foundations for his major works, which were to sweep across Europe and North America. Pufendorf rejected the concept of natural rights as liberties and the suggestion that political government is justified by its protection of such rights, arguing instead for a principled limit to the state's role in human life.

Book Nordic and Germanic Legal Methods

Download or read book Nordic and Germanic Legal Methods written by Ingvill Helland and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To gain a proper understanding of a foreign legal system, a legal scholar cannot rely on written sources alone. He must also familiarise himself with how these are interpreted and applied to hard cases. However, materials explaining legal methods are often difficult to access for foreign lawyers, as they tend to be written in the national language and build on a series of preconceptions inherent to the specific legal order. It is therefore the purpose of this book to provide the comparative legal scholar with the tools to overcome some of these initial obstacles and gain a better understanding of how colleagues from different legal systems think about law. The book gives an introduction to the legal methods of the countries in the Nordic and Germanistic legal families, primarily addressed to foreign readers, thus explaining also those unspoken preconceptions. It further seeks historical and cultural explanations for present-day legal methods, and explores the impact of internationalisation as well as the possibility of a common European legal method.
