The experimental results on the test set show a highly significant improvement of the recognition performance to more than 86%.

Book Hybrid one class classifier ensemble based on fuzzy integral for open lexicon handwritten Arabic word recognition

Download or read book Hybrid one class classifier ensemble based on fuzzy integral for open lexicon handwritten Arabic word recognition written by Bilal Hadjadji and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-class classifier (OCC) is involved for solving different kinds of problems due to its ability to represent a class distribution regardless the remaining classes. Its main advantage for multi-class classification is offering an open system and therefore allows easily extending new classes without retraining OCCs. So far, hidden Markov models, support vector machines and neural networks are the most used classifiers for Arabic word recognition, which provides a system with closed lexicon. In this paper, the OCCs are explored in order to perform an Arabic word recognition system with an open lexicon. Generally, pattern recognition systems designed by a single system suffer from limitations such as the lack of uniqueness and non-universality. Thus, combining multiple systems becomes an attractive research topic for performance and robustness enhancement. Fixed rules are commonly used us combiners for the hybrid OCC ensembles. The present paper aims to propose a combination scheme of OCCs based on the use of fuzzy integral (FI) operators. Furthermore, an alternative framework is proposed to design a parameter-independent and open-lexicon handwritten Arabic word recognition system as well as a new density measure function. Experimental results conducted on Arabic handwritten dataset using different types of OCCs with large number of classes highlight the superiority of FI for hybrid OCC ensembles.

Book Handwriting Recognition

Download or read book Handwriting Recognition written by Zhi-Qiang Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, research on handwriting recognition has made impressive progress. The research and development on handwritten word recognition are to a large degree motivated by many application areas, such as automated postal address and code reading, data acquisition in banks, text-voice conversion, security, etc. As the prices of scanners, com puters and handwriting-input devices are falling steadily, we have seen an increased demand for handwriting recognition systems and software pack ages. Some commercial handwriting recognition systems are now available in the market. Current commercial systems have an impressive performance in recognizing machine-printed characters and neatly written texts. For in stance, High-Tech Solutions in Israel has developed several products for container ID recognition, car license plate recognition and package label recognition. Xerox in the U. S. has developed TextBridge for converting hardcopy documents into electronic document files. In spite of the impressive progress, there is still a significant perfor mance gap between the human and the machine in recognizing off-line unconstrained handwritten characters and words. The difficulties encoun tered in recognizing unconstrained handwritings are mainly caused by huge variations in writing styles and the overlapping and the interconnection of neighboring characters. Furthermore, many applications demand very high recognition accuracy and reliability. For example, in the banking sector, although automated teller machines (ATMs) and networked banking sys tems are now widely available, many transactions are still carried out in the form of cheques.

Book Connectionist Speech Recognition

Download or read book Connectionist Speech Recognition written by Hervé A. Bourlard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connectionist Speech Recognition: A Hybrid Approach describes the theory and implementation of a method to incorporate neural network approaches into state of the art continuous speech recognition systems based on hidden Markov models (HMMs) to improve their performance. In this framework, neural networks (and in particular, multilayer perceptrons or MLPs) have been restricted to well-defined subtasks of the whole system, i.e. HMM emission probability estimation and feature extraction. The book describes a successful five-year international collaboration between the authors. The lessons learned form a case study that demonstrates how hybrid systems can be developed to combine neural networks with more traditional statistical approaches. The book illustrates both the advantages and limitations of neural networks in the framework of a statistical systems. Using standard databases and comparison with some conventional approaches, it is shown that MLP probability estimation can improve recognition performance. Other approaches are discussed, though there is no such unequivocal experimental result for these methods. Connectionist Speech Recognition is of use to anyone intending to use neural networks for speech recognition or within the framework provided by an existing successful statistical approach. This includes research and development groups working in the field of speech recognition, both with standard and neural network approaches, as well as other pattern recognition and/or neural network researchers. The book is also suitable as a text for advanced courses on neural networks or speech processing.

Book A Large Vocabulary Online Handwriting Recognition System for Turkish

Download or read book A Large Vocabulary Online Handwriting Recognition System for Turkish written by Esma Fatıma Bilgin Taşdemir and published by Cinius Yayınları. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handwriting recognition in general and online handwriting recognition in particular has been an active research area for several decades. Most of the research have been focused on English and recently on other scripts like Arabic and Chinese. There is a lack of research on recognition in Turkish text and this work primarily fills that gap with a state-of-the-art recognizer for the first time. It contains design and implementation details of a complete recognition system for recognition of Turkish isolated words. It considers the recognition of unconstrained handwriting with a limited vocabulary size first and then evolves to a large vocabulary system. Turkish script has many similarities with other Latin scripts, like English, which makes it possible to adapt strategies that work for them. However, there are some other issues which are particular to Turkish that should be taken into consideration separately. Two of the challenging issues in recognition of Turkish text are determined as delayed strokes and high Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV). This work examines these problems and alternative solutions at depth and proposes suitable solutions for Turkish script particularly.
