Book Twentieth Century South Africa

Download or read book Twentieth Century South Africa written by William Beinart and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-10-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative examination of the forces - both destructive and dynamic - which have shaped twentieth-century South Africa. This book provides a stimulating introduction to the history of South Africa in the twentieth century. It draws on the rich and lively tradition of radical history writing on that country and, to a greater extent than previous accounts, weaves economic and cultural history into the political narrative. Apartheid and industrialization, especially mining, are central theme, as is the rise of nationalism in the Afrikaner and African communities. But the author also emphasizes the neglected significance of rural experiences and local identities in shaping political consciousness. The roles played by such key figure as Smuts, Verwoerd, de Klerk, Plaatje, and Mandela are explored, while recent historiographical trends are reflected in analyses of rural protest, white cultural politics, the vitality of black urban life, and environmental decay. The book assesses the analysis of black reactions to apartheid, the rise of the ANC. The concluding chapter brings this seminal history up-to-date, tackling the issues and events from 1994-1999 - in particular the success of Mandela and the ANC in seeing through the end of apartheid rule. It also looks at the chances of a stable future for the new-found democracy in South Africa.

Book Atlas of Changing South Africa

Download or read book Atlas of Changing South Africa written by A.J. Christopher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of the atlas (first published as The Atlas of Apartheid) presents a comprehensive introduction and detailed analysis of the spatial impact of apartheid in South Africa. It covers the period of the National Party Government of 1948 to 1994, and emphasises the changes and the continuing legacy this presents to South Africans at the start of the 21st century. The Atlas makes the unique contribution of presenting the policy and its impact in visual, spatial forms by including over 70 maps, a highly appropriate method considering that apartheid was about the control of space and specific places.

Book Apartheid in South African Libraries

Download or read book Apartheid in South African Libraries written by Jacqueline Audrey Kalley and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa will be dealing with the legacy of apartheid for generations. Dr. Jacqueline Kalley has had the foresight and vision to document the experiences of black library users during South Africa's years of apartheid, focusing her studies on the second half of the twentieth century, when apartheid reached its zenith. Apartheid in South African Libraries is an in-depth study of the effect of apartheid on public, provincial, and community library services in South Africa. With a high degree of accuracy and objectivity, Dr. Kalley documents the past record and experiences of black libraries. She masterfully integrates the numerous aspects of this complicated subject including historical, legal, and resource concerns. A historical introduction helps provide background and context for the work, and an index, bibliography, and photographs round out the book.

Book The African National Congress and the Regeneration of Political Power

Download or read book The African National Congress and the Regeneration of Political Power written by Susan Booysen and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African National Congress is light years beyond the liberation movement of old. It remains a juggernaut, but its control and dominance are no longer watertight. The ANC lives the contradictions of weaknesses, cracks and factions while retaining its colossal status. As a party-movement it draws on its liberation credentials, and extracts immense power from its deep anchorage in South Africa’s people. It is immersed in electoral politics that marks the state of its overwhelming power cyclically. As government the ANC is the object of protest, but not protest designed to bring the ruling party to its knees. The ANC is in command of the state, yet fails to definitively counter the deficits that make South Africa’s democracy seem so diluted. Its incredulous and thus far trusting supporters condemn but only rarely punish deployees who do not ‘pass through the eye of the needle’. The ANC and the Regeneration of Political Power unpacks these contradictions. It focuses on four faces of the ANC’s political power – the organisation, the people, political parties and elections, and policy and government – and explores how the ANC has acted since 1994 to continuously regenerate its power. By 2011-12 the power configurations around the ANC were converging to a conjuncture holding vexing uncertainties. This book presents insights into how South African politics – in many ways synonymous with the politics of the ANC – is likely to unfold in years and possibly decades to come.
