Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Reports of Battles General: In compliance with instructions from your headquarters, on the 21st instant, I left camp at Lacey's Springs, Rockingham county, with all my available strength in cavalry, infantry and artillery, for the purpose of co-operating with General Imboden in Northwestern Virginia. The men and horses unfit for a hard campaign were left under Lieutenant Colonel Funsten, near Harrisonburg, to repress marauding from towards Winchester, and to afford protection to the people of the Valley. Close communication was formed with Brigadier General Fitz Lee, to secure timely succor in case of need. Unfavorable weather and the condition of the roads made the first day to Moorefield exceedingly arduous. We found the South Branch past fording, and were compelled to make a detour by Petersburg to get over. Here the ford was rough and dangerous from the swiftness of the stream. When but a small portion of the sixth cavalry had passed, one man and horse were drowned and two others narrowly escaped. Citizens of Petersburg, whose names I will ascertain and report to you, came manfully to our assistance, recklessly plunging to the assistance of all in peril, and remaining for hours in the cold water, until all were safe over. It was my intention to have packed, from "The Old Fields," forage for our horses, while engaged in the destruction of the tresselling at Cheat river. The forage could not be had, so on the 25th we were compelled to start with our sacks empty, trusting to fortune. The pass at Greenland, contrary to information we had received, was found occupied by the enemy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Confederate Official Reports of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern

Download or read book The Confederate Official Reports of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern written by H. L. Hanna and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2010 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Elkhorn tavern has been called the "Battle that saved Missouri for the Union", I prefer to know it as the "Battle that doomed Missouri to the Union". In these pages I have culled the reports made by the Confederate commanders that were collected by the U.S. War Department from the records captured after the fall of Richmond in 1865. These records were published in the massive 128 volume The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. These reports are excerpted from Series 1, Volume VIII, pages 281-330. A map and list of units composing General Van Dorn's Trans-Mississippi Army and enumeration of losses from Volume 1 of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War have also been attached. I have also added short biographical footnotes of some of the lesser known commanders, as well as photographs of many of the writers. These first hand accounts, most written within a few weeks of the Battle, offer a first hand look at not only the actions of the participants on the days of the Battle, but also at their after action thoughts on the Battle, and sometimes their own justifications and excuses for decisions made in the literal heat of combat.
