Excerpt: ...as a feature of high-class overland train service that can not be done away with without great dissatisfaction on the part of the traveling public. The cost of maintaining the high-class service required on diners of course justifies their use only where patronage is reasonably heavy, so that on some light-traffic lines and in local short-distance service, as well as on lower-grade trains, the receipts from diners would be far too low to permit of their operation. In such cases passengers would be fed at eating-houses, so it will be seen that each has its proper sphere of usefulness. In replying to this question, I have not touched on the cost of supplies purchased at some central points instead of in various markets, because the railroads generally have no interest in this matter as applied to eating-houses which are operated by private individuals under lease. Supplies for diners are purchased according to the best advantages, which the companies are enabled to do on account of the large amount used. W. A. Worthington. Mr. D.
