Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Guide and Album of the Cunard Steamship Company In pursuance of this undertaking, the new Company entered into a contract for the fortnightly conveyance of mails between Liverpool and Halifax, Boston, and Quebec. The contract was for a term of seven years, and the ships employed under it were to be of such a build that they might be available as troop ships, or for transporting stores in time of war. F our steamers were at once commenced, the Britannia, the Acadia, the Caledonia, and the Columbia, each of one thousand two hundred tons gross register, and of four hundred and forty horse power. The first of these, the Britannia, left Liverpool on her first voyage on the 4th of July, 1840, the day known to Americans as Celebration Day, thus inaugurating the service by a happy coincidence which, although unpremedi tated, was none the less significant of future success. The Britannia entered Boston harbour after a run of fourteen days and eight hours. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In consideration of these more onerous conditions, the subsidy was raised from to per annum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening in Detail is an original and impassioned take on the intellectual and sensory bounty of Cuban music as it circulates between the island, the United States, and other locations. It is also a powerful critique of efforts to define "Cuban music" for ethnographic examination or market consumption. Contending that the music is not a knowable entity but a spectrum of dynamic practices that elude definition, Alexandra T. Vazquez models a new way of writing about music and the meanings assigned to it. "Listening in detail" is a method invested in opening up, rather than pinning down, experiences of Cuban music. Critiques of imperialism, nationalism, race, and gender emerge in fragments and moments, and in gestures and sounds through Vazquez's engagement with Alfredo Rodríguez's album Cuba Linda (1996), the seventy-year career of the vocalist Graciela Pérez, the signature grunt of the "Mambo King" Dámaso Pérez Prado, Cuban music documentaries of the 1960s, and late-twentieth-century concert ephemera.

Book Georges Seurat

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michelle Foa
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2015-07-14
  • ISBN : 0300212828
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Georges Seurat written by Michelle Foa and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revelatory study of Georges Seurat (1859–1891) explores the artist’s profound interest in theories of visual perception and analyzes how they influenced his celebrated seascape, urban, and suburban scenes. While Seurat is known for his innovative use of color theory to develop his pointillist technique, this book is the first to underscore the centrality of diverse ideas about vision to his seascapes, figural paintings, and drawings. Michelle Foa highlights the importance of the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, whose work on the physiology of vision directly shaped the artist’s approach. Foa contends that Seurat’s body of work constitutes a far-reaching investigation into various modes of visual engagement with the world and into the different states of mind that visual experiences can produce. Foa’s analysis also brings to light Seurat’s sustained exploration of long-standing and new forms of illusionism in art. Beautifully illustrated with more than 140 paintings and drawings, this book serves as an essential reference on Seurat.
