Book Career Opportunities in Law Enforcement

Download or read book Career Opportunities in Law Enforcement written by California. Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet is for use as a law enforcement career information guide. It was designed primarily for students who may be interested in a career in law enforcement and to assist school counselors and teachers in answering questions raised by students about a law enforcement career. There is a critical need for qualified young men and women in the various fields of law enforcement. Some of the factors which account for this need are rapid population growth, higher police recruitment standards, increases in crime, and early retirement of policemen. Despite the critical need for new peace officers the entrance standards are high and will become even higher. Law enforcement today is changing to accommodate the needs of a changing society. The modern police profession emphasizes a high level of training and education. Science and technology and the social sciences are stressed with an emphasis on the complexity of today's society and the role of the police in preventing and controlling crime. There has been a dramatic growth in new college programs, yet the demand for qualified police applicants still outpaces the supply. A large number of agencies now select only applicants who have had college training. Many agencies require the applicant to possess at least an associate in arts degree and others require a baccalaureate degree.

Book Police Selection and Career Assessment

Download or read book Police Selection and Career Assessment written by Marvin D. Dunnette and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report details the research activities and validation efforts undertaken in the development of the two personnel evaluation inventories designed during this project, and outlines the instruments' operational uses. The major objective of this research program was to develop new methods for evaluating persons who apply for positions in police work and for assessing the potential of present police officers being considered for promotion. In order to accomplish this, critical features of four different police jobs were determined. These jobs were general patrol officer, investigator/detective, patrol sergeant, and intermediate command. The means by which these critical features and other information such as job performance ratings were utilized to develop and validate two personnel evaluation instruments are described in detail. The first evaluation instrument developed, which came to be called the police career index, consists of a brief, easily administered and objectively scored inventory to be used in preliminary screening of applicants and candidates for police jobs. The second procedure, the regional assessment center, consists of a series of police job simulation exercises designed to elicit behavioral indicators of a person's potential for success in various aspects of police work. Procedures for utilizing these instruments are outlined. Appendixes to this report include job performance description booklets for the four police positions, and tables showing reliability estimates for job performance ratings.
