Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deans and former deans map the recent past and contemplate the immediate future of liberal arts and sciences education For those who have devoted their lives to teaching, learning, and innovation in the arts and sciences, it likely comes as no surprise that there has been a revaluing and devaluing of the work of students and faculty in the arts and sciences fields. In response Mary Anne Fitzpatrick and Elizabeth A. Say offer From the Desk of the Dean, an anthology of original essays by arts and sciences deans and former deans addressing the increasing demands for vocational education at the expense of the liberal arts and sciences. This informative collection examines the challenges in higher education and offers a compelling case for the value of the liberal arts and sciences. To honor the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS), the largest association of arts and sciences deans in the country, editors Fitzpatrick and Say, both past presidents of CCAS, have assembled nine essays as well as three section introductions to create From the Desk of the Dean. Their goal is to prompt open discussions about American higher education and the perceived value of degrees in the basic arts and science fields. Many agree that to the public an accounting degree is of greater value than an art history degree and a civil engineering degree has more value than a degree in physics. The contributors to the volume include deans with experience working at public and private universities, large research universities, comprehensive teaching institutions, as well as scholarly and advocacy groups. Their essays, informed by their experiences as leaders who support excellence in teaching, research, and creative activity in the basic fields of human knowledge, examine the many criticisms of higher education and of the faculty and programs in arts and sciences. Sally Mason, president emerita of the University of Iowa, provides a foreword.

When Brand begins looking into the first murder, he discovers the dean's secret notes about the faculty in hidden files in his computer. From her very childhood she was introduced to the notions of humanism and altruism which were presented to her by her father. Lyudmila Nobles father was her mentor and her role model. In the former Soviet Union Lyudmila received her education as linguist, educator and military nurse. She majored in English/German. Later she got her Masters Degree in Social Work in New York, USA. In her book she invites her potential readers to think, to analyze and to understand about the reasons which made Soviet people to leave their country. As everyone is aware nobody leaves and departs from a good life. On the surface her main character had a great career, house, family, children, husband But that was the tip of the iceberg. The underlying reason for her departure from the former Soviet Union was deep down and deeply hidden from the eyes of the bystanders. In her book she tried to capture the most significant events which led the country to the collapse and made an impact of the destinies of the citizens of that country greatly Being a sensitive author, she wants to say in her book, My freedom is finishing when your freedom ends. As a matter of fact, in the former USSR the notions will and freedom were not separated. The authorities did everything what they wanted to do in spite of the fact that they hurt constantly Soviet people the people of values and dignity. The main purpose of this book is that very fact that the author intended to introduce relatively newly arrived Russian-speaking community to the American Society. To break stereotypes about Russians as the rigid people who came from the cold freezing country with similar personalities, instead she shows the real Russians in the US.

Book Reckoning with Race

Download or read book Reckoning with Race written by Frederick Allen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reckoning with Race is a firsthand account of race relations in America from award-winning journalist, author, and former CNN commentator, Rick Allen. Allen's collection of essays shows the progress our country has made—and how much further we have to go. In his fifty-year career as an award-winning journalist, CNN commentator, and author of multiple books, Rick Allen has had a front-row seat on dramatic change in race relations in America. In Reckoning with Race, a collection of eighteen essays, he explores his ongoing efforts to understand the struggle of black and white Americans to navigate a shared history at once wicked and intimate, full of love and hate, as they seek to level an uneven playing field. Allen examines issues from the era of Reconstruction through Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, the rhythms of resistance and progress, into today’s contentious debates over redlining, reparations, and critical race theory. Starting as a reporter with the Atlanta Constitution in 1972, Allen got to know and befriend legendary black political figures including Julian Bond, John Lewis, Andy Young, Hosea Williams, Maynard Jackson, Jesse Jackson, and Daddy King, the father of Martin Luther King, Jr. He also encountered ardent white segregationists, some of whom saw the light and others who took their racism to the grave. Drawing on his experience covering politics, he examines presidents from LBJ and Jimmy Carter to Obama and Trump. He explores the symbolism of Confederate flags, the controversy over Uncle Remus, the election of Atlanta’s first black mayor, Maynard Jackson, and the tragic case of the Atlanta Child Murders. He has had first-hand encounters with white supremacy and violent black protest alike. Throughout Reckoning with Race, Allen is candid about his own shortcomings as a white native Northerner learning gradually about the complexities of race in his adoptive South. The essays highlight his continuing journey toward understanding the forces that both hinder and promote equality and harmony between the races.
