Book excerpt: The off-design operation of an isentropic plug nozzle designed for a jet pressure ratio of 15 was investigated experimentally at subsonic Mach numbers up to 0.9 and jet pressure ratios up to 5. When installed in a cylindrical nacelle with a sharp turn at the nozzle lip, the interaction of the jet and the external stream produced low pressures on the base formed by the high lip angle. These low pressures increased the nacelle drag and caused an overexpansion of the jet, which resulted in lower pressures on the plug and, hence, reduced thrust. With a boattail ahead of the plug nozzle, the base pressures were increased and the jet overexpansion significantly reduced.

Book excerpt: Results of an investigation at static conditions and at Mach numbers up to 1.82 are presented for 12 nozzle configurations which have jet convergence angle and jet throat area as geometric parameters. The variation of jet convergence angle from 15 to 40 deg had little effect on the performance of the nozzles having the large value of primary throat area; however, increasing jet convergence angle generally had an adverse effect on performance of the nozzles having the smaller value of primary throat area. The performance of the nozzle configurations with the larger primary throat area is competitive with nozzles designed for operation over the Mach number range.

Three of the nozzles were designed to conform to Prandtl-Meyer streamlines for pressure ratios of 5, 10, and 24; and a fourth, arbitrarily contoured, with a length less than that required for isentropic expansion, was designed for a pressure ratio of about 9. The effects of variations in the side plate, the lip angle, and the geometry upstream of the throat were investigated on the nozzle designed for a pressure ratio of 10.

The performance of selected plug nozzle geometries was neasured over a range of speed and pressure ratios. The influence on performance of the gas specific heat ratios was experimentally determined by testing the same nozzle with gases of different specific heat ratios. The reduced experimental data is presented in tabular form as well as graphic presentation in several formats. (Author).
