Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military History: Lectures Delivered at Trinity College, Cambridge There is little in these lectures, or at any rate in three out of four of them, which I have not written at greater length in other volumes. I therefore publish them unwillingly, and in deference only to the wishes of some of my audience, whose good opinion I greatly value, and whose kindly sympathy I shall never forget. If this little volume should set but one student thinking seriously as to the meaning of military history, its object will be fully accomplished. The spelling of Indian names has been, as usual, a stumbling-block. No doubt I shall be asked why I have used the form Narbada for the more familiar Nerbuddha, and yet written Hyder Ali instead of Haidar Ali. I can only say that when the form Kalkata (or whatever may be the Hunterian spelling) is substituted for Calcutta, I shall be prepared to plead guilty to inconsistency. Book Facsimiles of Twelve Early English in the Library of the Trinity College Cambridge Classic Reprint

Download or read book Facsimiles of Twelve Early English in the Library of the Trinity College Cambridge Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facsimiles of Twelve Early English in the Library of the Trinity College, Cambridge This small collection of facsimiles is intended for the use of such students of the College as may wish to begin the study of earlier English literature. The manuscript collections in the Library afford an admirable opportunity of acquiring the familiarity with original texts without which I do not believe that the study can be profitably pursued. The hundred or so English manuscripts written before 1501 form a very representative as well as important collection in which every period from the eleventh century onward is fairly illustrated. For the convenience of those who have no acquaintance with old handwritings I have here selected twelve pages for reproduction and furnished these with transliterations and notes. This will supply beginners with specimens of certain typical hands of various dates, further examples of which they will readily be able to find in the Library itself by help of the chronological list of manuscripts printed at the end.
