Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliographical Sketch of the Laws of the Massachusetts Colony, From 1630 to 1686: In Which Are Included the Body of Liberties of 1641, and the Records of the Court of Assistants, 1641-1644 During the past year the City of Boston has obtained for its Public Library the famous manuscript duplicate of the records of the Massachusetts General Court, formerly owned by Gov. Hutchinson, later by Col. Thomas Aspinwall, and last by Hon. Samuel L. M. Barlow of New York city. This acquisition has revived an interest in the question of the method in which our early official records of the legislature were kept, and especially in the matter of the literary importance of this manuscript. Book Colonial Massachusetts Laws and Liberties and the English Commonwealth

Download or read book Colonial Massachusetts Laws and Liberties and the English Commonwealth written by Charles Edward Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 4, 1653, the Nominate or Barebones Parliament convened with a minority of committed radicals (Levellers and religious extremists) and a conservative majority of Cromwell’s allies. During acrimonious debates on law reform, the radicals demanded a condensed law book similar to the one adopted in Colonial Massachusetts. These mostly overlooked events reveal a radical wing of Puritanism determined to found a self-governing state, fully cognizant of the real possibility that England would interdict such attempts by force of arms. This work investigates the motives for such a hazardous undertaking, and the possible influences these events had on the colony’s posterity.

Book Legal Development in Colonial Massachusetts 1630 1686

This book was released on 2005 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores a fascinating aspect of the early colony's legal system: its denial of the binding force of English law in favor of an original legal system. Although the common law played a role, the colonists used it selectively and combined it with the provisions of the colony's charter, local statutes and scripture. One of the earliest books on the history of American law, this pioneering work was originally published in the series Studies in History, Economics and Public Law edited by the Political Science Faculty of Columbia University.

Book Massachusetts Body of Liberties

Download or read book Massachusetts Body of Liberties written by Ann Byers and published by Cavendish Square Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bill of Rights is one of America's most treasured documents. Most of the rights guaranteed in the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, as well as many others, were introduced in America 150 years earlier, in the Massachusetts Body of Liberties. This 1641 document, composed by extremely strict Puritans, proclaimed that citizens were entitled to protections that were revolutionary for their time. How did men who frequently punished people arbitrarily and cruelly, for seemingly trivial offenses, write such a code? This book explains all of this, as well as why and how those liberties impact Americans today.
