Book excerpt: Sweden passed through the global financial and economic crisis with limited damage, thanks to strong macroeconomic, fiscal and financial fundamentals and a competitive and diversified business sector. The economy is proving resilient in the current environment of sluggish global growth and high uncertainty. Indeed, Sweden is among the few countries where output is now well above its level before the 2008 global financial and economic crisis. Strong domestic demand has underpinned growth, in a context of weak export markets. Fiscal policy has supported activity through the operation of automatic stabilisers and tax cuts. While sustainability is not at risk, the government plans to gradually improve the fiscal position as the recovery strengthens. Monetary policy is set to remain accommodative toward off risks of deflation and lift inflation towards target. Macro-prudential policy is being reinforced to prevent the build-up of financial imbalances, not least an unsustainable increase in household debt, as interest rates stay low.

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys Sweden 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Swedish economy is growing steadily, but the expansion has peaked and global uncertainties weigh on the outlook. Monetary and fiscal stimulus has supported the recovery, but is being gradually withdrawn as the economy operates close to full capacity. Strong public finances provide space for fiscal loosening in the case of a downturn, especially as low interest rates reduce monetary policy margins. Beyond a strong economy, Sweden enjoys high well-being, low inequality and strong environmental performance.

Book OECD Economic Surveys Estonia 2019

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys Estonia 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia’s economy continues to perform well, and growing incomes support well-being. However, the expansion has peaked, and growth is set to soften due to weak international demand. Prudent fiscal policy has resulted in low debt, but spending pressures related to meeting infrastructure needs and ageing are mounting. Old age poverty is high and the proposal to allow early withdrawal of pension funds threatens macroeconomic stability and pension adequacy. The gender wage gap is among the highest in the OECD, and inequalities in income and health are considerable, reflecting gaps in the social safety net. The oil-shale sector is highly energy-intensive and is the main culprit behind Estonia’s high greenhouse gas emissions, but reducing dependence on the sector is challenging, as it is an important employer and meets 70% of Estonia’s energy needs.
