Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is written as a journal by a naive Catholic girl from Poland as she is thrown into the world, where she discovers herself in the spiritual maze of beliefs and concepts. She goes through life as it presents her with new experiences and she makes her way through them in the incessant longing to know and understand more. She doesn't offer dry facts of what she discovers and believes, she doesn't attempt to tell the readers what the truth is, or what reality is all about. She innocently and eagerly asks questions, but not necessarily always gives the answers. She is not anyone's teacher, but through her personal odyssey, spanning a period of about eight years, she compels the casual reader to think just a little less casually. The embracement of all human encounters, philosophies, and ways of living remains her key to the higher understanding of the experience of life. Although perceived as an "airhead" by some, she enthusiastically takes us through simple, but large, ideas; the religious and spiritual concepts the humanity developed to explain the inexplicable. Through her philosophical and esoteric growth the reader feels accompanied on their own inner search. Being a part of life's journey toward the Absolute, and going at the same time through the ordinary human experience full of pain and emotions qualifies anyone to talk about what unfolds along their way. This time, the journey is hers, and she invites everyone to join.

Book excerpt: ACTUALLY, I COULD ORDAIN YOU RIGHT NOW IF YOU LIKE. THOSE WORDS PRESENTED NEWLY BLONDE, NON-RELIGIOUS ME WITH AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WOULD ULTIMATELY SHAPE THE IDIOCY OF THE YEARS TO FOLLOW. In the United States over the last ten years, twenty-three million couples have married. The Idi-Odyssey is the story of my random journey through .000003% of those weddings. The story begins with an unplanned ordination in Lake Tahoe by Yukon Dave, a white-water rafting guide/minister. A myriad of ridiculous weddings situations and relationships followed, ultimately leading to the Year of the Wedding during which my younger brother Russ married the same woman three times in the same year. Not to be completely outdone by the marital gymnastics, I secretly married my girlfriend to keep her in the country a week after Russ' first wedding; and despite my father's counseling, Don't feel any pressure to get married just because your younger brother did. Along the way, there's also the Nantucket whale penis, the great gift wars of 1999, the Idiotarod, the weddings I officiated and much, much more.

At the age of 43, writer Allen Abel decided to move home to Brooklyn, stay with his mother (in the same apartment in which he grew up), and explore and write about the borough of his birth. For several months he wandered along Flatbush Avenue, the thoroughfare that runs like a spine through Brooklyn. The result is a delightful family memoir and exploration of a unique place. He hobnobs with Mohawk high-steel workers, tries to learn voodoo secrets from Haitian immigrants, commiserates with policemen detailed to the subway, and chats with an ex-zookeeper in Prospect Park. He revisits the scenes of his childhood, samples social life in distant Flatlands, and hunts for horseshoe crabs on the shoreline. Book Fingers Crossed How Music Saved Me from Success

Download or read book Fingers Crossed How Music Saved Me from Success written by Miki Berenyi and published by Nine Eight Books. This book was released on 2022-09-29 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rough Trade Book of the Year Resident Book of the Year A Rolling Stone Book of the Year A Mojo Book of the Year A Sunday Times Book of the Year Formed in 1988, Lush were part of the London gig scene during one of the most vibrant and creative periods in UK music. Now, Miki Berenyi tells all. From the bohemian ways of her father's social circle to the privileged glamour of her mother's acting career, Miki's young life was a blur of travel, celebrities and peripatetic schooling. But frequent relocation, parental neglect and the dark presence of her abusive grandmother resulted in crippling shyness, mental-health issues and a vulnerability to exploitation. The route out of this hole was music - a passion shared by schoolmate Emma Anderson. The teenagers began attending gigs together and would ultimately go on to form Lush. Talented and exuberant, the band became hot property, swiftly transitioning from shoegaze icons to Britpop darlings. Re-living the tours, recording sessions and music-industry madness they experienced along the way, this uncompromising memoir documents Lush's thrilling rise and untimely fall. Yet at the heart of the book are Miki's own battles: the conflict between her mouthy public persona and her thin-skinned private identity; the trials of being a woman in an infuriatingly male world; the struggle to find a middle ground between 'safe' indie obscurity and 'sell-out' international success. Miki also explores her complicated relationship with Emma - one that has fluctuated between camaraderie and rivalry over the years - and addresses the devastating tragedy that led to the band's split. Told through frank confession, wry humour and searing emotional honesty, this is the incredible tale of a trailblazing woman and a seminal band.

Book Fat Dog

    Book Details:
  • Author : Krish Day
  • Publisher : Troubador Publishing Ltd

Download or read book Fat Dog written by Krish Day and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-28 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert is an ageing labrador. He lives with his master, the Professor, an academic of some renown, in a small town somewhere in Germany, a community largely untouched by history and the larger world beyond. Much bereaved by the loss of his beloved mistress, the Professor’s wife, Albert leads a quiet existence observing the follies and foibles of the humans around him. The arrival of Fräulein Breitfuss, the new Head Librarian, a flamboyant young woman of dubious provenance, sends ripples through the slumberous town. The male populace is agog, the womenfolk suspicious… and Albert is not happy when she moves into the Professor’s life. Neither are the locals when she also attempts to shake the community out of its habitual lethargy with an Arts Festival. The affair between the Professor and the librarian takes a dramatic turn when the woman's unexpected and intricate past presents itself. Rendered homeless by the tragic end of the liaison, unable to renew love and fealty to a new master, Albert takes to the woods above the town, in imitation of imagined ancestors hunting in the wilds. Albert’s narrative weaves together episodes from the lives of a colourful cast of characters. Blending high farce and sombre realities, small vanities and impossible dreams, love found and love lost, the tale winds through a century of drama and conflict with a seemingly guileless innocence. Finally, Albert dimly perceives human lives as the tragicomic sum of accident, whim and fancy, rather than the orderly outcome of principles and high ideals. Fat Dog is narrated by Albert the Labrador, but is not a traditional 'pawtobiography'. As the tale proceeds, the canine voice gradually becomes merely that of a raconteur, allowing the events and episodes to unfold on their own, with occasional and detached musings on the human condition. It is an enjoyable read for any fans of fiction that offers a quirky insight into human nature.
