Book excerpt: Odysseus Elytis (1911-96) won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1979. With Seferis and the 'Generation of the Thirties', he introduced French Surrealism into Greek poetry. Kimon Friar's classic translation The Sovereign Sun begins with his brilliantly sensuous early poems. It has large selections from his master work, Axion Esti (1959), and includes the whole of his Heroic and Elegiac Song for the Lost Second Lieutenant of the Albanian Campaign (1945). His Nobel Prize citation stated: 'Against the background of Greek tradition, his poetry depicts with sensuous strength and clearsightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness.'

Book Mediterranean Modernisms

Download or read book Mediterranean Modernisms written by Marinos Pourgouris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging with the work of Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseus Elytis within the framework of international modernism, Marinos Pourgouris places the poet's work in the context of other modernist and surrealist writers in Europe. At the same time, Pourgouris puts forward a redefinition of European Modernism that makes the Mediterranean, and Greece in particular, the discursive contact zone and incorporates neglected elements such as national identity and geography. Beginning with an examination of Greek Modernism, Pourgouris's study places Elytis in conversation with Albert Camus; analyzes the influence of Charles Baudelaire, Gaston Bachelard, and Sigmund Freud on Elytis's theory of analogies; traces the symbol of the sun in Elytis's poetry by way of the philosophies of Heraclitus and Plotinus; examines the influence of Le Corbusier on Elytis's theory of architectural poetics; and takes up the subject of Elytis's application of his theory of Solar Metaphysics to poetic form in the context of works by Freud, C. G. Jung, and Michel Foucault. Informed by extensive research in the United States and Europe, Pourgouris's study makes a compelling contribution to the comparative study of Greek modernism, the Mediterranean, and the work of Odysseus Elytis.

Book The Aegean

Download or read book The Aegean written by Odysseas Elytēs and published by Melissa Publishing House. This book was released on 1992 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of eleven essays provides an assessment of the influence the Aegean world has exerted upon Greek art and civilization throughout the ages. The eleven authors, all leading experts in their fields of history, literature and art, highlight important aspects of the Aegean world in texts that combine up-to-date scholarship with a lively re-evaluation of philosophy, architecture, sculpture painting, etc. The book's most engaging quality, however, is the manner in which it attempts to convey a vivid image of the Aegean Sea and the civilization that flourished on its islands. Illustrated throughout with unique, often full page aerial photographs and drawings, the volume brilliantly captures the essence of Greek civilization and constitutes a lively introduction to the history of the Aegean world. It also provides a comprehensive study and evaluation of its many aspects and succeeds in establishing it as a point of reference for Western culture.

Download or read book Odysseus Elytis written by Odysseas Elytēs and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This representative selection from the work of one of modern Greece's most fascinating poets was made shortly after his award of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1979. It is drawn from all periods of his distinguished career and traces his development from early surrealism, in which he transforms French influence into a distinct personal voice and mythology, through the dramatic style of The Axion Esti with its blend of spirituality and earthiness, up to the later work in which he experiments with new modes for expressing his perennial themes. The poems are chosen, introduced and mainly translated by the leading translators of modern Greek poetry, Edmund Keeley and the late Philip Sherrard, whose collaborations also included translations of Seferis, Cavafy and Sikelianos. Other contributors to the book include George Savidis, Nanos Valaoritis and John Stathatos. Born in Crete in 1911, Odysseus Elytis began to publish his poetry in the 1930s. He took part in the campaign against the Italian fascists in Albania in 1940-41. He was one of the most prominent poets of the Greek resistance during the Nazi occupation. The Nobel Prize was awarded to him for his poetry which, against the background of Greek tradition, depicts with sensuous strength and intellectual clear-sightedness modern man's struggle for freedom and creativeness'. He died in Athens in 1996.
