Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Eine j dische Odyssee written by Joachim Kalter and published by Hartung & Gorre. This book was released on 1997 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memoirs of a Jew born in 1923 in Leipzig, who was expelled from Germany to Poland, with his parents and two brothers, in October 1938. The family settled in Tarnów, the father's native town. In November 1939, Kalter was taken for forced labor; in April 1940 he was transferred to the Dębica labor camp. In December 1940 he managed to escape, returned to Tarnów, and hid there, but several months later he was captured and sent back to the camp. His mother and elder brother were deported and killed in 1942, his father in 1943. In 1944 Kalter was sent to Auschwitz, and in November joined his younger brother in Monowitz; together they were taken in January 1945 on a death march to Gleiwitz, and a transport to Buchenwald and then Langenstein, where they were liberated. After the war Kalter emigrated to the USA; these memoirs were written during his journey there in summer 1946. Pp. 9-13, 77-81 contain an introduction by Erhard Roy Wiehn, in German and English. Pp. 67-76 present a reaction to the book by James Stuart Brice.

Book excerpt: In November 1978, a boat, the Hai Hong, carrying 2,500 Vietnamese refugees arrived in Malaysia. The Government refused to allow the refugees to disembark on the basis that they had paid the shipowners for their passages. All the refugees were later resettled, mostly in the United States, Canada, the Federal Republic of Germany and France. This book tells the story of the Canadian resettlement programme, covering such aspects as the causes of the exodus; initial public reaction in Canada; the Canadian Government's deliberations and eventual decision to accept 600; the selection and processing of the refugees in Malaysia; the airlift to Canada; and the arrival in Canada.

Absolutely sui generis." —Booklist, starred review Without a word, The Wanderer presents one little paper boat's journey across the ocean, past reefs and between icebergs, through schools of fish, swaying water plants, and terrifying sea monsters. The little boat is all alone, and while its aloneness gives it the chance to wonder at the fairy-tale world above and below the waves, that also means it must save itself when it storms. And so it does. Readers young and old will find the strength and inspiration in this quietly powerful story about growing, learning, and life's ups and downs.
