Book excerpt: A longed-for meeting between a woman and her birth family spurs fantasies of a "happily ever after" utopian togetherness....a secret longing that may exist within the hearts of many with an adoption, relinquishment, and reunion experience. Instead, and unknown to her at the time, that longed-for meeting would actually serve as the catalyst for stepping onto the wanderer's path. A path of spiritual awakening, and, in some instances, remembering, that would involve walking into the deepest, and sometimes, treacherous, of ambiguous terrains. A path guided by totemic sages of diverse spiritual practices that would lead to a far different reunion: reconnection with The Creator....though more as a partner and less than a parent. And a path, concealed from that initial reunion day, that would eventually reveal itself via embracing a home within the heart and soul of Judaism.

Book Post Truth and Political Discourse

Download or read book Post Truth and Political Discourse written by David Block and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book David Block draws on analytical techniques from Critical Discourse Studies to critically investigate truth, truths, the propagation of ignorance and post-truth. Focusing on corrupt discourses and agnotology, he explores the role of anti-intellectualism, emotion and social media in the cultural creation, legitimisation and dissemination of ignorance. While encompassing analysis of discourses on Donald Trump, Brexit, climate change and the Alt-Right, Block furthers our understanding of this global phenomena by providing a revealing analysis of political communications relating to corruption scandals involving the Spanish conservative party. Through an innovative theoretical framework that combines critical discourse and discourse historical approaches with nuanced political analysis, he uncovers the rhetorical means by which esoteric truths and misleading narratives about corruption are created and demonstrates how they become, in their turn, corrupt discourses. This original work offers fresh insights for scholars of Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Politics, Cultural and Communication Studies, and will also appeal to general readers with an interest in political communication and Spanish politics.

Book Colombia s Narcotics Nightmare

Download or read book Colombia s Narcotics Nightmare written by James D. Henderson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Colombia's illegal drug trade--and of the extreme violence it created--describes how in the late 1960s narcotics traffickers from the United States convinced Colombians who had no previous involvement in the drug trade to grow marijuana for export to America. By the early '70s, foreign (mostly American) traffickers began requesting cocaine. This book focuses on the decades of crime and violence the illegal drug trade brought to Colombia and how this social upset was ended in the early 2000s. Six chapters detail the Medellin and Cali cartels' war against the Colombian government, the revolutionary guerrillas' war against the government, the war that paramilitary groups conducted against the guerrillas, and the way in which the government finally put a stop to the cartel-financed bloodshed. In conclusion, the author assesses Colombia's progress and prospects since the end of the violence claimed the lives of some 300,000 between 1975 and 2008.

Book Counterfeit Politics

Download or read book Counterfeit Politics written by David Kelman and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Counterfeit Politics, David Kelman reassesses the political significance of conspiracy theory. Traditionally, political theory has sought to banish the “paranoid style” from the “proper” domain of politics. But if conspiracy theory lies outside the sphere of legitimate politics, why do these narratives continue to haunt political life? Counterfeit Politics accounts for the seemingly ineradicable nature of conspiracy theory by arguing that all political statements ultimately take the form of conspiracy theory. Through careful readings of works by Ernest Hemingway, Ricardo Piglia, Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Jorge Luis Borges, Ishmael Reed, Jorge Volpi, Rigoberta Menchú, and Ángel Rama, Kelman demonstrates that conspiracy narratives bear witness to an illegitimate or “counterfeit” secret that cannot be fully recognized, understood, and controlled. Even though the secret is not authorized to speak, this “silence” is nevertheless precisely what gives the secret its force. Kelmangoes on to suggest that all political statements—even those that do not seem “paranoid”—are constitutively illegitimate or counterfeit, since they always narrate this unresolved play of legitimacy between an official or authorized plot and an unofficial or unauthorized plot (a “complot”). In short, Counterfeit Politics argues that politics only takes place as “conspiracy theory.”

Book The Miraculous Lie

  • Author : Bart L. Lewis
  • Publisher : Lexington Books
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780739107874
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book The Miraculous Lie written by Bart L. Lewis and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The golden specter of El Dorado and its promises of unlimited wealth have haunted Western iconography for centuries. The Miraculous Lie: Lope de Aguirre and the Search for El Dorado in the Latin American Historical Novel is a fascinating study of five twentieth-century Latin American novels that focus on one particular search for El Dorado: the infamous 1559 expedition, headed by Pedro Ursua and the first legendary colonial rebel against the crown, Lope de Aguirre. Author Bart Lewis approaches five works--Arturo Uslar Pietri's El Camino de El Dorado, Abel Posses's Daim-n, Miguel Otero Silva's Lope de Aquirre, Pr'ncipe de la Libertad, Jorge Ernesto Funes's Una Lanza por Lope de Aguirre, and FZlix _lvarez SOenz's Cr-nica de Blasfemos--as representations of Latin American literature during the mid to late twentieth-century and as re-examinations of the notorious figure of Lope de Aguirre. Lewis is therefore able to provide not only a successful chronology of the stylistic development of the Latin American novel, but also a thoughtful analysis of how these novels appropriate Aguirre and give a revisionist and authentic voice to the Latin American cultural founder. Wonderfully engaging and beautifully written, The Miraculous Lie examines the search for El Dorado in modern Latin American literature as the search for self-determination.
