This work introduces a novel comprehensive concept of reading strategy, comprising individual differences in reading style and reading skill as well as reader goals. In a series of sentence reading experiments recording eye movements, the influence of reading strategies on reader- and word-level effects assuming distributed processing has been investigated. Results provide evidence for strategic, top-down influences on eye movement control that extend our understanding of eye guidance in reading.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine any differences in saccades, fixations, reading rates and reading comprehension between adults with and without Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) like symptoms while completing a cognitive task. To simulate real world tasks and content retention, the cognitive task used was a reading comprehension task. Using an eye-tracker, participants' (N=39) eye movements were monitored as they read through a text passage. Results showed no significant differences in oculomotor patterns between those with ADHD-like symptoms and those without and no significant differences in accuracy scores in the reading comprehension questions that followed the passage.

Book excerpt: When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.

Book excerpt: Convergence insufficiency (CI) is the inability to adequately converge the eyes at near, such as when reading, and can lead to symptoms.[11] This study utilized fMRI to compare brain activations during vergence activities between normal binocular vision (NBV) and CI subjects and to compare activation associated with divergence to that of convergence in NBV subjects. Subjects, age18–30 years, were confirmed for NBV or CI status by sensorimotor examination prior to undergoing fMRI scanning within a Siemens 3T-MRI scanner while performing vergence eye movement activities. Data analysis was performed using FMRIB Software Library (FSL 5.0.4). Six NBV and seven CI subjects participated. The CIs showed larger amounts of brain activity during convergence (Zmax@V2=14.72) than the NBVs (Zmax@V2=9.42), including multiple areas of activation in saccadic regions and deactivation of attention-related ROIs. While the NBVs showed significant activation for convergence (Zmax@V2=9.42) and more so for increased demands (Zmax@V2=11.27), the NBVs showed minimal activation for divergence (Zmax@V2=3.97) with a decrease in divergence activation when alternated with an increased convergence demand (Zmax@V2=3.57).
