This normally transparent structure has been the focal point for Dr. Klintworth's research endeavors for more than two decades. This monograph summarizes current knowledge about angiogenesis within this tissue as well as information about the related issue of the cornea's normal avascularity. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the topic based on studies by a large number of investigators who were either concerned with corneal neovascularization in particular or angiogenesis in general.

  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2008-01-01
  • ISBN : 3805583761
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Surgery for the Dry Eye written by Gerd Geerling and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of structures contribute to tear production and maintenance, including the tear system, the lids and the orbit. The ocular surface itself is also a part of the system, including the cornea and conjunctiva. This makes for a very complex situation that can easily lead to changes in tear film and the ocular surface that are called "dry eye." Here a team of experts carefully examine how and when surgery is indicated, addressing normal tear film, normal anatomy (including immunological interactions), classification and diagnosis, anti-inflammatory and immnunosup-pressive concepts, correction and drainage techniques, surgery of the conjunctiva and cornea, keratoprosthesis surgery, botulism toxin injections, mucous membrane grafting, and salivary gland transplantation along with other treatments. The collection closed with a set of scientific studies. The color and monochrome clinical photographs and line illustrations are especially well-chosen and informative.

Recent advances in molecular biology and genetic engineering have fosteredbasic knowledge regarding the growth factors and intercellular messengers and their association with theproliferationofnew blood vessels. These latter findings sparked a renewed interest in Michaelson's "X-factor" ofocular neovascularization and opened avenues for possible innovative therapeutic approaches. Therefore, the suggestion to organize an international gathering of clinicians and scientists interested in problems of ocular circulation and neovascularization was received with great enthusiasm. Book Anti VEGF

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francesco Bandello
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 3805595298
  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book Anti VEGF written by Francesco Bandello and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of therapy with anti-angiogenics or vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors (anti-VEGF) has marked the beginning of a new era in neovascularization and macular edema treatment. Its main goals are the inhibition of growth and development of new vessels along with the reduction of vascular permeability. The advantages over conventional laser photocoagulation are evident as laser treatment always leaves scars and causes a retinal sensitivity deterioration. Starting with an outline of treatment principles, this volume covers all aspects of anti-VEGF therapy for ophthalmological disorders. In particular, specific chapters are dedicated to age-related macular degeneration, degenerative myopia, angioid streaks, inflammatory diseases, hereditary dystrophies, retinal vein occlusion, diabetic retinopathy, ocular tumors, as well as anterior segment neovascularization. The book gives an update on the application of anti-VEGF in ocular diseases to general ophthalmologists as well as retina specialists.

Book Angiogenesis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael E. Maragoudakis
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 1475791887
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Angiogenesis written by Michael E. Maragoudakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angiogenesis is a multistep process, which involves activation, proliferation and directed migration of endothelial cells to form new capillaries from existing vessels. Under physiological conditions, in the adult organisms angiogenesis is extremely slow, yet it can be activated for a limited time only in situations such as ovulation or wound healing. In a number of disease states, however, there is a derangement of angiogenesis, which can contribute to the pathology of these conditions. Hence, understanding the molecular biology of endothelial cell activation and differentiation and the mechanisms involved in the regulation of angiogenesis, could explain the derangement in disease states and also provide the basis for developing promoters or suppressors of angiogenesis for clinical applications. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Angiogenesis: Molecular Biology, Oinical Aspects" held in Rhodes, Greece, from June 16-27, 1993. This meeting was a comprehensive review of the various aspects of angiogenesis such as embryonic development, endothelial cell heterogeneity and tissue specificity, molecular biology of endothelial cell, mechanisms for the regulation of angiogenesis, disease states in which angiogenesis is involved and potential application of promoters or suppressors of angiogenesis. The presentations and discussions of the meeting provided an opportunity for investigators from many different areas of basic science and medicine to exchange information, evaluate the present status and provide future research directions in the field of angiogenesis.
