  • Pages : 257 pages

Book excerpt: “A pleasant, chatty book on a fascinating subject.” — Kirkus Reviews Octopuses have been captivating humans for as long as we have been catching them. Yet for all of our ancient fascination and modern research, we still have not been able to get a firm grasp on these enigmatic creatures. Katherine Harmon Courage dives into the mystifying underwater world of the octopus and reports on her research around the world. She reveals, for instance, that the oldest known octopus lived before the first dinosaurs; that two thirds of an octopus’s brain capacity is spread throughout its arms, meaning each literally has a mind of its own; and that it can change colors within milliseconds to camouflage itself, yet appears to be colorblind.

Book The Den That Octopus Built

Download or read book The Den That Octopus Built written by Randi Sonenshine and published by Candlewick Press. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow one of the ocean's most mysterious animals in this warm but candid look at its dramatic life cycle, from the creators of The Nest That Wren Built. These are the shells she wears like a sheath, keeping her safe from Tiger Shark's teeth when she's far from the den that Octopus built . . . The solitary and ingenious octopus is a master of disguise and invention, creating her den out of the objects of the ocean, from shells and rocks to tiny glass shards. Using creative methods of hunting and construction, the octopus prepares for the biggest task of her life: motherhood. With one last, poignant gesture of love, the mother octopus sends her hatchlings on their way, starting a new cycle of life for the tiny offspring who face peril of their own. Offering deeply informative back matter, including an author's note, a glossary, and fascinating "octo-knowledge" (did you know that octopuses have nine brains, including one in each of their independently operating arms?), this third in a series from author Randi Sonenshine and illustrator Anne Hunter continues the work of gently introducing children to the reality of the animal world.

Download or read book The Greatest Trivia Book Ever 1 written by Mitchell Symons and published by Boldwood Books Ltd. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All my life I’ve collected weird and wonderful facts. Even before ‘trivia’ was (or should that be ‘were’?) invented, I’ve been obsessed with the pursuit of what you might call worthless knowledge. Now, after a lifetime’s devotion to the cause, I’m proud to present to you my favourite facts of all time. My greatest hits, if you will. Most of what you will read has been acquired organically, from reading books, magazines and newspapers. However, I am happy to acknowledge material culled from the internet – which was where I first saw PROOF THAT HELL IS EXOTHERMIC and Hugh Gallagher’s brilliant THE ULTIMATE COLLEGE APPLICATION. I have tried to source – and/or get permission to use - these wonderful items but to no avail. However, I'm sure that their original authors would appreciate this wider audience.

Book Gregory Bateson on Relational Communication From Octopuses to Nations

Download or read book Gregory Bateson on Relational Communication From Octopuses to Nations written by Phillip Guddemi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-03 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops Gregory Bateson’s ideas regarding “communication about relationship” in animals and human beings, and even nations. It bases itself on Bateson’s theory of relational communication, as he described it in the zoosemiotics of octopus, mammals, birds, and human beings. This theory includes, for example, the roles of metaphor, play, analog and digital communication, metacommunication, and Laws of Form. It is organized around a letter from Gregory Bateson to his fellow cybernetic thinker Warren McCulloch at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In this letter Bateson argued that what we would today call zoosemiotics, including Bateson’s own (previously unpublished) octopus research, should be made a basis for understanding the relationship between the two blocs of the Cold War. Accordingly the book shows how Bateson understood interactive processes in the biosemiotics of conflict and peacemaking, which are analyzed using examples from recent animal studies, from primate studies, and from cultural anthropology. The Missile Crisis itself is described in terms of Bateson’s critique of game theory which he felt should be modified by an understanding of the zoosemiotics of relational communication. The book also includes a previously unpublished piece by Gregory Bateson on wolf behavior and metaphor/ abduction.

But to The Useless Information Society, any fact that passes its gasp-inducing, not-a-lot-of-people-know-that test merits inclusion in this fascinating but ultimately useless book... Did you know (or do you care)... • That fish scales are used to make lipstick? • Why organized crime accounts for ten percent of the United States’s annual income? • The name of the first CD pressed in the United States? • The last year that can be written upside-down or right side-up and appear the same? • The shortest performance ever nominated for an Oscar®? • How much Elvis weighed at the time of his death? • What the suits in a deck of cards represent? • How many Quarter Pounders can be made from one cow? • How interesting useless information can be? The Book of Useless Information answers these teasers and is packed with facts and figures that will captivate you—and anyone who shares your joy in the pursuit of pointless knowledge.
