Book excerpt: Work is derived from any activity, this provides security and welfare, resulting in happiness, the good life, man should concentrate on developing their craft because they become like gods, and to seek their freedom in activities that are end in themselves, their true life is leisure (“Skolian”) is apt for this kind of life, in order to seek democracy. Happiness is linked with the satisfaction of material needs to have meaning when they are limited, is well protected slavery as the value of work that does not allow distractions to hinder their development, avoiding material excess, but the work renders freedom it is imperative to meet the needs of daily living. Aristotle argues that happiness only appears at leisure, so the games must be conducted in parallel with the work, taking a break from work fatigue and leading to a break that emanates from the game. Happiness is in terms of the obtained and enjoyed, and an expected life is to enjoy every moment at work, it is likewise necessary to have free time, which becomes more and more in an attempt to find roots, enjoying the remoteness of the lonely. Unemployment is presented here as a threat to the enjoyment of life, underemployment is presented which should be taken into account in the unemployment, it is not a job, is a “how to get what the newspaper?” Is disguised unemployment but it is a real unemployment. This, unemployment will become more sense, though employment as such moves towards the services sector, here are tourism, which in industrialized countries generates a very high percentage of total jobs, but should not forget that in what is to happen are the effects and damage on employment. Thus, the income generated by employment make holidays a trend that should continue even if they have the means, and that man should not allow the loss of his humanity for the work, you must keep it at leisure. The challenge is then the generation of a new economic and tourism sector which results in the Postmodern Tourism.

  • Pages : 177 pages

Download or read book Serious Leisure written by Robert A. Stebbins and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-31 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serious Leisure offers a comprehensive view and analysis of the current state of the sociology of leisure. Defining and differentiating the way people use their free time, Stebbins divides such activity into categories of serious, casual, and project-based leisure that he further separates into a variety of types and subtypes. Together they comprise what he calls "serious leisure." In this perspective, serious leisure constitutes systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity sufficiently substantial and interesting in nature and requiring special skills, knowledge, and experience. Casual leisure, though immediately, intrinsically rewarding, is by contrast a relatively short-lived pleasurable activity, requiring little or no special training to enjoy it. Project-based leisure is a short-term, reasonably complicated, occasional creative undertaking carried out in free time. Stebbins sets out the basic concepts and propositions that make up the three forms, focusing on their essential elements. He takes stock of the serious leisure literature as well as that for casual and project-based leisure. Stebbins sees "serious leisure" realized by way of a set of foundational concepts--organization, community, history, lifestyle, and culture--and several of their component areas. He reviews the history and background of the concept of serious leisure and then adds historical commentary on, first, casual leisure and, then, project-based leisure. Finally, he examines the future and the importance of the serious leisure perspective in a globalizing world, and some of its critical links with other fields of knowledge and practice, notably the nonprofit sector and preventive medicine. Together with its original insights, Serious Leisure offers a single, handy, coherent, comprehensive resource. It will be of interest to sociologists, labor studies specialists, and economists.

Book Leisure experiences opportunities and contributions to human development

Download or read book Leisure experiences opportunities and contributions to human development written by María Jesús Monteagudo and published by Universidad de Deusto. This book was released on 2018-04-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new human development paradigm rests on the human and cultural capital of peoples and revolves around the challenge of increasing the well-being and happiness of people. Therefore, leisure understood in today’s societies as one of the key means to feel good, satisfied with life and reaffirmed in the pursuit of a meaning for life, seems to be ultimately called to play a key role in promoting human development processes. The contents of this book are a good proof of it. Each chapter focuses on a different approach, discipline or group and highlights the potential of leisure experiences for human development. This book is an invitation to reflection and thought on issues that, far from being irrelevant, have a bearing on people's future, in terms of happiness, well-being and quality of life. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that future leisure develops under the guidelines of a leisure that contributes to human development.
