Book Oceanography and Marine Biology

Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Biology written by R.N. Hughes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever-increasing interest in oceanography and marine biology and their relevance to global environmental issues create a demand for authoritative reviews summarizing the results of recent research. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review has catered to this demand since its founding by the late Harold Barnes more than 50 years ago. Its objectives are to consider, annually, the basic areas of marine research, returning to them when appropriate in future volumes; to deal with subjects of special and topical importance; and to add new subjects as they arise. The favourable reception and complimentary reviews accorded to all the volumes shows that the series is fulfilling a very real need. Volume 54 follows closely the objectives and style of the earlier volumes, continuing to regard the marine sciences—with all their various aspects—as a unity. Physical, chemical, and biological aspects of marine science are dealt with by experts actively engaged in these fields. The series is an essential reference text for researchers and students in all fields of marine science and related subjects, and it finds a place in libraries of universities, marine laboratories, research institutes and government departments. It is consistently among the highest ranking series in terms of impact factor in the marine biology category of the citation indices compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information/Web of Science.

Book Impact of Littoral Environmental Variability on Acoustic Predictions and Sonar Performance

Download or read book Impact of Littoral Environmental Variability on Acoustic Predictions and Sonar Performance written by Nicholas G. Pace and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The limiting influence of the environment on sonar has long been recognised as a major challenge to science and technology. As the area of interest shifts towards the lit toral, environmental influences become dominant both in time and space. The manyfold challenges encompass prediction, measurement, assessment and adaptive responses to maximize the effectiveness of systems. Although MCM and ASW activities are dom inated in different ways and scales by the environment, both warfare areas have had to consider the significantly changing requirements posed by operations in the littoraL The fundamental scientific issues involved in developing models relating acoustics to the environment are matched in difficulty by the need for data for their validation and eventual practical use for prediction. In many instances the need is for on-line adaptation of systems to changing circumstances whilst other needs are for the Ionger term planning activities. This book and the attached full-color CD are the proceedings of a conference organ ised by the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, on 16-20 September 2002. The fundamental problems associated with environmental 1 variability and sonar were explored at a previous SACLANTCEN conference in 1990. These problems have not gone away but, on the one hand are exaggerated by the move to the littoral and on the other hand, are open to treatrnent in new ways that advances in technology and computer power allow.

Book Marine Mammal Observer and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Handbook

Download or read book Marine Mammal Observer and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Handbook written by Victoria Todd and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Mammal Observer and Passive Acoustic Monitoring Handbook is the ultimate instruction manual for mitigation measures to minimise man-made acoustical and physical disturbances to marine mammals from industrial and defence activities. Based on more than two decades of offshore experience, and a decade of supplying MMO and PAM services (commercial and scientific), the Handbook is a long-overdue reference guide that seeks to improve standards worldwide for marine operations such as seismic and drilling exploration, wind farm and civil engineering piling, dredging, trenching, rock-dumping, hydrographical surveys, and military/defence exercises. By popular request, this manual will also form an accompaniment to MMO and PAM courses. The Handbook consolidates all aspects of this discipline into one easily accessible resource, to educate all stakeholders (e.g. MMOs, PAM operators, suppliers, recruitment agencies, clients, contractors, regulators, NGOs, consultants, scientists, academia and media), regardless of experience. Topics include worldwide legislation, compliance, anthropogenic noise sources and potential effects, training, offshore life, visual and acoustic monitoring (theory and practice), marine mammal distribution, hearing and vocalisations, and report writing. Advice is provided on implementing sensible and practical mitigation techniques, appropriate technologies, data collection, client and regulator liaison, and project kick-off meetings. "The Handbook is an indispensable How To guide to the growing and increasingly important occupation of marine mammal monitoring, written with clarity and humor by scientists who have extensive experience in this field." —Dr Phillip J. Clapham, world-renowned cetologist and Director of the Cetacean Assessment and Ecology Program at the National Marine Mammal Laboratory in Seattle.

Book Developments in Electrochemistry

Download or read book Developments in Electrochemistry written by Derek Pletcher and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Fleischmann was truly one of the ‘fathers’ of modern electrochemistry having made major contributions to diverse topics within electrochemical science and technology. These include the theory and practice of voltammetry and in situ spectroscopic techniques, instrumentation, electrochemical phase formation, corrosion, electrochemical engineering, electrosynthesis and cold fusion. While intended to honour the memory of Martin Fleischmann, Developments in Electrochemistry is neither a biography nor a history of his contributions. Rather, the book is a series of critical reviews of topics in electrochemical science associated with Martin Fleischmann but remaining important today. The authors are all scientists with outstanding international reputations who have made their own contribution to their topic; most have also worked with Martin Fleischmann and benefitted from his guidance. Each of the 19 chapters within this volume begin with an outline of Martin Fleischmann’s contribution to the topic, followed by examples of research, established applications and prospects for future developments. The book is of interest to both students and experienced workers in universities and industry who are active in developing electrochemical science.

Book Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Vehicles

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence for Autonomous Vehicles written by Sathiyaraj Rajendran and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of advanced technologies in AI, driverless vehicles have elevated curiosity among various sectors of society. The automotive industry is in a technological boom with autonomous vehicle concepts. Autonomous driving is one of the crucial application areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Autonomous vehicles are armed with sensors, radars, and cameras. This made driverless technology possible in many parts of the world. In short, our traditional vehicle driving may swing to driverless technology. Many researchers are trying to come out with novel AI algorithms that are capable of handling driverless technology. The current existing algorithms are not able to support and elevate the concept of autonomous vehicles. This addresses the necessity of novel methods and tools focused to design and develop frameworks for autonomous vehicles. There is a great demand for energy-efficient solutions for managing the data collected with the help of sensors. These operations are exclusively focused on non-traditional programming approaches and depend on machine learning techniques, which are part of AI. There are multiple issues that AI needs to resolve for us to achieve a reliable and safe driverless technology. The purpose of this book is to find effective solutions to make autonomous vehicles a reality, presenting their challenges and endeavors. The major contribution of this book is to provide a bundle of AI solutions for driverless technology that can offer a safe, clean, and more convenient riskless mode of transportation.
