Book excerpt: In support of International Ice Patrol, four cruises were conducted of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and the Labrador Sea during 1970 to study ocean currents that affect the drift of icebergs. The dynamic topography of the Labrador Current and its environs showed significant departure from normal, but there was general agreement between the dynamic topographies relative to the 1000 and 3000 decibar surfaces. STD data from analog traces were compared with those from a Digital Data Logger; significant differences were found. (Modified author abstracts).

Book excerpt: Five oceanographic surveys were conducted in the vicinity of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland in support of International Ice Patrol operations in 1964. Measurements of temperature and salinity obtained from serial Nansen observations were used to determine the dynamic topography, a principal factor in studying the most probable drift of icebergs endangering shipping in this area. Later analysis of selected oceanographic sections was accomplished to calculate the volume flow and heat transport through these sections. An additional survey convered the area adjacent to Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland, and a section between South Wolf Island, Labrafor, and Cape Farewell, Greenland. Analyses for dissolved oxygen and nutrients were made on sea water samples from the latter section. Preliminary studies of iceberg deterioration and specific drift factors were conducted. (Author)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oceanography of the Grand Banks Region and the Labrador Sea: April June, August, and October, 1969 The average surface circulation south and east of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland dur ing April and May can be inferred from charts of the mean monthly dynamic topography of the sea surface relative to the -decibarsurface prepared by Soule, 1964 (figs. 1 and These charts are based on 22 years of data with equal weight being given to each year represented. Broken-line contours have been used in areas where the data base is 6 years or less. The charts show the Labrador Current flowing south between the 100 fathom and fathom contours on the eastern slope of the Grand Banks. To the east of the Labrador Current is a dynamic trough consisting of water of low specific volume resulting from the mixing of Labrador Current water and North Atlantic Current water. The Labrador Current flows south on the western side of the dynamic trough and the North Atlantic Current flows north on the eastern side of the trough.
