This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A report by the Physical Oceanography Panel of the National Research Council of the United States into the physical oceanographic aspects of the Environmental Studies Program. The Committee evaluated the quality and relevance of studies carried out in waters under federal control which extend from the limits of state jurisdictions (3-12 miles offshore) and include the central and outer continental shelf waters and the continental slope of the United States.

Book Oceanic Fronts in Coastal Processes

Download or read book Oceanic Fronts in Coastal Processes written by Malcolm J. Bowman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this report we discuss the physical and biological properties of coastal fronts, including estuarine fronts. We assess the present state of scientific knowledge, what are the significant environmental implications, what are the most important areas upon which to focus future research, and what resources will be needed to attain those goals."--Introduction.

Book Oceanographic Processes of Coral Reefs

Download or read book Oceanographic Processes of Coral Reefs written by Eric Wolanski and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades since publication of the first edition, substantial advancements have been made in the science, the need for transdisciplinary approaches to coral reef protection greater than ever before. This new edition, now in full color throughout with accompanying animations, goes beyond identifying foundational information and current problems to pinpoint science-based solutions for managers, stakeholders and policy makers. Coral reefs are connected by currents that carry plankton and the larvae of many reef-based organisms. Further, they supply food to reefs. Currents also bring pollutants from the land and, together with the atmosphere, affect the surrounding ocean. The chapters in this book provide a much-needed review of the biophysics of reefs with an emphasis on the Great Barrier Reef as an ecosystem. The focus is on interactions between currents, waves, sediment and the dynamics of coastal and reef-based ecosystems. The topographic complexity of reefs redirects mainstream currents, creates tidal eddies, mushroom jets, boundary layers, stagnation zones, and this turbulence is enhanced by the oceanographic chaos in the adjoining Coral Sea. This is the environment in which particles and organisms, of a range of sizes live, from tiny plankton to megafauna. This generates faunal connectivity at scales of meters to thousands of km within the Great Barrier Reef and with the adjoining ocean. Pollution from land-use is increasing and remedial measures are described both on land and on coral cays. The impact of climate change is quantified in case studies about mangroves and corals. Modelling this biophysical complexity is increasing in sophistication, and the authors suggest how the field can advance further.

Book Oceanography of the Southeastern U S Continental Shelf

Download or read book Oceanography of the Southeastern U S Continental Shelf written by L. P. Atkinson and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1985 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Coastal and Estuarine Sciences, Volume 2. The AGU Monograph Series on Coastal and Estuarine Regimes is intended to provide timely summaries and reviews of major process and regional studies, both observational and theoretical, and of theoretical and numerical models. It grew out of an IAPSO/SCOR/ECOR working group initiative several years ago designed to enhance scientific communications on this topic. The series' authors and editors are drawn from the international community. The ultimate goal is to stimulate bringing the theory and observations of coastal and estuarine regimes together on the global scale.

Book Assessment of the U S Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Studies Program

Download or read book Assessment of the U S Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Studies Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessment of the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Studies Program reviews the ecological studies done by the Environmental Studies Program of the Minerals Management Service. This program, which has spent $10 million a year on ecological studies in recent years, is designed to provide information to predict and manage the environmental effects of outer continental shelf oil and gas activities. The book considers studies on marine mammals and endangered species, birds, benthic organisms, fisheries, and marine ecosystems and makes recommendations for future studies.
