Book excerpt: On Cruise No. 22 of R/V ATLANTIS II from June 10 to August 4, 1966, 115 sound velocity profiles WHOI SVP No. 371 - SVP No. 485, were measured with a sound velocity profiling system that incorporated an on-line PDP-5 computer. The cruise covered approximately 356,000 square miles of water between Bermuda and the Antilles. The main purpose of the cruise was to look for long-period internal Rossby waves expected from earlier cruises, ATLANTIS II No. 11 and CHAIN No. 47, and to improve techniques in gathering oceanographic data. Part I of this report presents the observations of ATLANTIS II Cruise No. 22 with possible interpretations. On the way to the Sargasso Sea ATLANTIS II traversed the eye of hurricane ALMA and new information was obtained on the air-sea interaction. In the Sargasso Sea the temperature data and the sound velocity data suggest that the circulation is complicated with eddies of large size. Part II is separately bound and consists of figures of the sound velocity profiles with comments concerning their reliability where necessary. (Author).

Book excerpt: The FRONTS Expedition was a multi-institutional experiment to study the subtropical front of the central North Pacific and to assess its variability in time and space. Ships, aircraft, and satellites were employed during the experiment and a broad range of measurements were carried out, ranging from microstructure to large-scale buoy trajectories. This report deals with hydrographic work carried out on the R/V THOMAS WASHINGTON. The principal objective was to measure the three-dimensional thermohaline structure in the upper 1500 m. of the ocean in a 2 deg by 2 deg latitude-longitude area centered over the subtropical front. In this area, sampling was done a 20 min by 20 min latitude-longitude grid, to bring out the relevant frontal features. The grid was occupied twice, to determine the time variability of the thermohaline structure.
