Download or read book Large Marine Ecosystems of the North Atlantic written by H.R. Skjoldal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-04-16 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide assessments of multidecadal changes in resources and environments of the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) of the North Atlantic. Using the case study method, researchers examine the forces driving the changes and actions underway aimed at turning the corner from declining trends in biomass yields, toward recovery of depleted species populations and improvements in ecosystem integrity.Recently a distinguished group of 24 scientists argued eloquently that a new Sustainability Science was emerging that was focused on "meeting fundamental human needs while preserving the life support systems of planet Earth". The contributions contained in this volume are at the cutting edge of Sustainability Science and the results presented by the contributors are pertinent to one of the core questions: "How are long-term trends in environment and development, including consumption and population, reshaping nature-society interactions in ways relevant to sustainability?" (Science Vol. 292, 27 April 2001). The case studies demonstrate the utility of an ecosystem-based approach to the assessment and management of biomass yields and species sustainability.Movements toward ecosystem-based management have emerged from the case studies on the initiation of recoveries of several depleted groundfish stocks of the US Northeast Shelf LME; the collapse of the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf cod; the assessment of physical and biological changes on the Scotian Shelf, West Greenland Shelf, Iceland Shelf LME, and the Faroe Plateau, the North Sea, and the Barents Sea LMEs. Uncertainties, with regard to environmental and human-generated forcing, are addressed in assessment of the states of the Iberian Coastal and Biscay-Celtic LMEs, and in broad-scale studies of the influences at the base of the food chain of climatic variability on the productivity and biodiversity of plankton communities of the North Atlantic. The volume concludes with an insightful perspective on the approaches used and the results reported by the eminent marine scientist and former President of ICES, Professor Gotthilf Hempel.

Download or read book Worldwide review of bottom fisheries in the high seas in 2016 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Worldwide review of bottom fisheries in the high seas in 2016 is an update to the first Worldwide review of bottom fisheries in the high seas, published in 2009 based on information from 2003 to 2006. It provides states and other interested parties with a summary of the current status of high seas bottom fisheries worldwide. The present, updated review begins with a description of the demersal finfish and shellfish resources, before offering a global perspective on fisheries and management; it then provides specific, regional information over eleven chapters covering the high seas of the world’s oceans, by region. Drawing on data up to and including 2016, it provides a survey of the current state of bottom fisheries since the original Worldwide review, considering these fisheries in the context of their historical evolution.

Download or read book Worldwide Review of Bottom Fisheries in the High Seas written by Alexis Bensch and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2008 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides a summary of the current status of high seas bottom fisheries worldwide based on the best information available. The review contains information on the fleets and their fishing activities across nine major oceanic areas. It also informs the implementation of the FAO International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas by providing background information and highlighting gaps in the available information.
Download or read book Deep Sea Demersal Fish and Fisheries written by N.R. Merrett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-10-31 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the bottom-living fishes of the world's largest ecosystem, the deep-sea. After a brief review of the oceanographic setting, the diversity and ecology of this unique ichthyofauna are considered in detail. The book goes on to deal explicitly with slope fisheries, both developed and developing. The interaction of the ecology of the species involved (examples include orange roughy, grenadier, Greenland halibut and black scabbardfish) with fishing practices and management regimes is then discussed. An ecological framework for management is necessary for the resources to be sustainable it is argued, rather than simply extending approaches used on the Continental Shelf to the deep-sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A major landmark contribution to fisheries science and fish ecology. Rockfish populations are in a severe decline throughout the Northeastern Pacific, and the need for a deep understanding of their biology, ecology, and management has never been more critical. This book addresses all aspects of our current knowledge of this diverse and interesting group of groundfish species, and it is written clearly and with humor. An outstanding work!"--Larry G. Allen, California State University, Northridge "Quite simply the best account ever of the fascinating, diverse, and valuable rockfishes. If you are interested in the marine fishes of the Pacific Coast, you need this book."--Peter B. Moyle, author of Inland Fishes of California
Download or read book Environmental Economics written by Dodo J. Thampapillai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Economics explores the ways in which economic theory and its applications, as practised and taught today, must be modified to explicitly accommodate the goal of sustainability and the vital role played by environmental capital. Pivoting around the first and second laws of thermodynamics, as well as the principles of ecological resilience, this book is divided into five key parts, which includes extensive coverage of environmental microeconomics and macroeconomics. It drills down into issues and challenges including consumer demand; production and supply; market organisation; renewable and non-renewable resources; environmental valuation; macroeconomic stabilisation, and international trade and globalisation. Drawing on case studies from forestry, water, soil, air quality, and mining, this book will equip readers with skills that enable the analyses of environmental and economic policy issues with a specific focus on the sustainability of the economy. Rich in pedagogical features, including key concepts boxes and review questions at the end of each chapter, this book will be a vital resource for upperlevel undergraduate and postgraduate students studying not only environmental economics/ecological economics but also economics in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustained, intensive fieldwork involves the negotiation of trust between the researcher and the researched. In The Politics and Ethics of Fieldwork, Maurice Punch catalogues and illustrates occasions of trust-making and breaking among the many parties who are actively engaged in a research project. This is not, however, a dry listing of do's and don'ts. Professor Punch has provided a vivid, witty, sometimes ironic presentation packed with lively personal detail.
