Book Progress Report Abstracts Oceanic Biology Program

Download or read book Progress Report Abstracts Oceanic Biology Program written by OFFICE OF NAVAL RESEARCH NSTL STATION MS. and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 Progress Report Abstracts of the Oceanic Biology Program represents the fourteenth year in which the projects supported by the program have been represented in a report of this nature. Progress Report Abstracts is the single document of the Program that brings together all the investigations receiving support and relates them to broad naval problem areas while presenting a brief of the scientific objectives and accomplishments. The purpose of these Abstracts is twofold. They serve to introduce and relate the Program to other offices and bureaus of the Navy as well as other government agencies. Secondly, but perhaps more importantly, they serve as an avenue for coordination and communication among investigators whose projects are sponsored by this Program. A broad range of studies in marine biology and biological oceanography is represented. Techniques and approaches used by one discipline may also prove useful to others, and the forum presented by these abstracts can provide an interchange that normally might not result from a literature search or dialogues with colleagues. Book Marine Biology A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Marine Biology A Very Short Introduction written by Philip V. Mladenov and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans are our planet's most distinctive and imposing natural habitat. They cover 71 per cent of its surface; support a remarkably diverse and exquisitely adapted array of life forms, from microscopic viruses, bacteria, and plankton to the largest existing animals; and possess many of Earth's most significant, intriguing, and inaccessible ecosystems. In an era in which humans are significantly altering the global environment, the oceans are undergoing rapid and profound changes. The study of marine biology is thus taking on added importance and urgency as people struggle to understand and manage these changes to protect our marine ecosystems. Healthy oceans produce half of the oxygen we breathe; stabilize our climate; create ecosystems that protect our coasts from storms; provide us with abundant food; and host diverse organisms that provide us with natural products for medicine and biotechnology. In this Very Short Introduction, marine biologist Philip Mladenov provides an accessible and up-to-date overview of marine biology, offering a tour of marine life and marine processes that ranges from the unimaginably abundant microscopic organisms that drive the oceans' food web to the apex predators that we exploit for food; from polar ocean ecosystems to tropical coral reefs; and from the luxurious kelp beds of the coastal ocean to deep-ocean hydrothermal vents where life exists without the energy of the sun. Throughout the book he considers the human impacts on marine life including overfishing, plastic and nutrient pollution, the spread of exotic species, and ocean warming and acidification. He discusses the threats these pose to our welfare, and the actions required to put us on a path to a more sustainable relationship with our oceans so that they can be restored and protected for future generations. Mladenov concludes with a new chapter offering an inspiring vision for the future of our oceans in 2050 that can be realised if we are wise enough to accelerate actions already underway and be bold with implementing new approaches. The next decade will decide the state of the oceans that we leave behind for future generations. Download or read book Biological Oceanography written by Charles B. Miller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-05-21 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Biological Oceanography has been greatly updated and expanded since its initial publication in 2004. It presents current understanding of ocean ecology emphasizing the character of marine organisms from viruses to fish and worms, together with their significance to their habitats and to each other. The book initially emphasizes pelagic organisms and processes, but benthos, hydrothermal vents, climate-change effects, and fisheries all receive attention. The chapter on oceanic biomes has been greatly expanded and a new chapter reviewing approaches to pelagic food webs has been added. Throughout, the book has been revised to account for recent advances in this rapidly changing field. The increased importance of molecular genetic data across the field is evident in most of the chapters. As with the previous edition, the book is primarily written for senior undergraduate and graduate students of ocean ecology and professional marine ecologists. Book Introduction to Marine Biology

Download or read book Introduction to Marine Biology written by George Karleskint and published by Brooks Cole. This book was released on 1998 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for one-semester non-majors in marine biology or a field-related marine biology course at any two- or four-year school, this text explores ocean ecology. It looks at how organisms interact with each other and the environment. Phonetic pronunciations are provided for difficult terms and names of organisms throughout the text and selected key terms have page references and provide a reviewing tool for learning the language of biology. End-of-chapter questions are provided at three levels - multiple choice, short answer and thinking critically - allowing students to test their understanding in a variety of ways.
